My name is Jamie Griffiths and I'm one of the pre-service teachers from Deakin University. I'm currently working alongside Fiona Hillier and Angela Butera and they suggested that we show off the incredible work the students have done.

EnviroFest 2020!

Last Friday the college celebrated EnviroFest 2020! Although a little different from previous years, there was a generous contribution of participation and support from students and staff and all images were shared on Instagram @rscsustainability (Check out our story highlights!)

The Green Team encouraged others to do the scavenger hunt, watch enviro-films and share how they were connecting with their environment.

More so than any other year, the staff really got involved and shared how they were considering the environment during isolation:

  • Pour used turps back into the same bottle & re-use : ) & growing more flowers
  • Made cloth face masks for myself and the fam instead of using disposable ones
  • Last lockdown I bought an electric bike to get to school. This lockdown I am seriously considering buying an electric car.
  • Sharing our excess lemons and limes with all the walkers was pass by our house.
  • I've revived my veggie patch and compost!
  • Certainly cut down on printing this term
  • We got a compost bin! Something we had been meaning to do but hadn't (no good excuse) so finally did it! Also have made fabric masks so I'm not using the disposable ones :)
  • Our council sent us a little compost bin caddy so we can start putting compost scraps in to our green waste bin. They also gave us 2 native plants to plant. It was the best gift to receive during lockdown.
  • Planting more 'bee friendly' plants in the garden!
  • I've pruned all of our fruit trees, and we've rejuvenated our veggie garden.
  • Complete new fit-out of our camper using mostly recycled materials.
  • Composting and about to start some spring veggie seeds
  • I've planted a little herb garden and have been sewing face masks out of re-purposed fabric
  • My cactus garden makes me happy, they look after themselves and not even I can kill them! There are great 🌵I have spent time making cuttings, potting presents for friends
  • Trying not to use my car and walking to the local supermarket when buying small amounts of groceries
  • I put things I don't want on Zero Waste Freebies rather than throw things away

There were 3 winners of the Bee Bath competition and a $20 Bunnings voucher.
