Associate Principal, Operations Report

It has been good to see blue uniforms worn by happy masked students around the grounds this week.

We have sought to stress to students the need to wear their masks properly. Lunch breaks are not, of themselves, times when masks may be removed.  We have pointed out that the regulations require masks to be worn unless eating or drinking.  At school, masks may only otherwise be removed for strenuous physical activity approved by a teacher.  I ask for parents’ support in providing a common message about this matter.

Similarly, physical distancing is something we must consider.  It is difficult in a school setting but it is not impossible.  Class-room furniture is set out in a more spread fashion and students need to space themselves more when in groups, even outside.  Once again, a consistent message being delivered from both school and home will make it easier for students to understand the requirement and parents’ support in this will also be appreciated.

A third area where I ask for parents’ support is with regard to social gatherings.  In previous times we might have used the word “parties”!  Clearly, such activities are not permitted in Victoria under current regulations – indeed social gatherings at homes or in the outdoors are restricted in total number and in terms of the number of families involved.  Nonetheless, we hear the odd whisper about activities being planned.  Perhaps they are just that: whispers.

Clearly, boarders will not be given permission to attend any function which is at odds with the legal requirements but it would be good if there were no mixed messages in this regard.  Whilst we recognise that young people have missed out on much this year, we also recognise that encouraging any conscious flouting of the rules is not in their interests either.

I hope that all school families can assist us by providing a consistent message regarding the following of the regulations currently in place.  We want to enjoy a smooth and full final term of the year.
