#DSCrecharge

Students Shine for #DSCrecharge

From amazing artworks to film production and kitchen creations, DSC students across the College enjoyed a day off from their usual lessons recently as part of #DSCrecharge day.

On 9 September for years 7 - 9 and 16 September for Year 10s, students were given a day to develop a new skill of their choice, to reconnect with the fun of learning whilst given space to foster their wellbeing.

The above collages show some of the students' creations. Further highlights are below:

#DSCrecharge Reflections

Scout P (9E):

"#DSCRecharge was a fantastic opportunity. I’m grateful that we were given a day to step away from our devices and follow our interests. Even though I'm home all the time, the demands of schoolwork haven’t left a lot of free time to relax and pursue other interests. #DSCRecharge gave me the time to do this and to work on a skill that I really enjoy, but usually don’t have time for. I spent my #DSCRecharge day pursuing a challenging aspect of drawing which involved sketching a photo of an entirely black Labrador. It really benefited my mental health as I was able to unwind and focus on something that I thoroughly enjoy. I was also able to improve my drawing skills. Overall, #DSCRecharge was an amazing opportunity and I would be more than happily do it again."

Zac P (7E):
"#DSCRecharge was a really good idea. It was nice to have a relaxing day."

Roger G (7E):
"I liked the idea of having a day off and spending it on tasks away from the computer. The best thing was definitely being able to show my new skill to everyone!"

Abbey MCD (7E):
"I really loved the day. It was so nice to have time away from my screen, and I felt productive doing things that I enjoy. I completed quite a few different activities and developed some new skills."

Michael C (7E):
"It was really fun learning how to solve my Rubik’s Cube! It was annoying when it didn't match, but now it's back to normal."

Tilly H (7E):
"I really enjoyed #DSCrecharge day. I baked some doughnut holes and went on a walk. I liked being able to do something I enjoyed, and work at my own pace. Overall, I had a great time."

Miller T-L (8C):

"#DSCrecharge was a day to relax and switch off from the problems of the world around us. It was a chance to take a break from our screens and do something we might not have done before, or improve on a skill. I chose to spend the day painting with water colour paints and drawing. I also baked some choc chip cookies and played with my rabbit, Percy. I loved the opportunity to slow down and choose how I spent my day instead of having to worry about deadlines and due dates. Overall it was a really enjoyable and relaxing day. and I hope we have another #DSCrecharge soon!"

Melina and Tanvi:

"On 9 September, #DSCRecharge was organised as a tribute to 'R U OK Day' which is held on 10 September each year. The day began with students logging onto their DiSCovery class and planning their day. After DiSCovery, students planned a task or skill to focus on for the day, allowing them to reflect and re-engage.

R U OK Day is a national day dedicated to reminding everyone that every day is a day to ask 'are you ok'? It is an Australian non-profit organisation founded by Gavin Larkin in 2009. R U OK Day advocates for people to have conversations with others.

#DSCRecharge was beneficial as it gave us time to spend time with our loved ones and to learn something away from online school. It gave us time to leave our workspace and pick up a new hobby. Tanvi decided to take a walk and explore painting, while Melina decided to cook a meal for her family.

#DSCRecharge was a success. We were fortunate to have been given a day to unwind, look after our wellbeing and have a break from our devices. We were very grateful for the opportunity and consideration given to us by DSC teachers.
