Year 10 Work Experience: Benefits & Forward Planning

For many Year 10 students, finding and participating in work experience was difficult this year.

Some students were able to attend an actual workplace, but the majority of students participated in virtual work experience through The Careers Department at school.

Being involved in work experience offers invaluable insights into the world of work.

Work experience benefits:

  • Career aspirations can be confirmed, or realisations are made that the chosen career path is not suitable
  • First hand experience of working life is gained
  • Skills are built in team building and communication
  • Connections are made between what has been learnt at school and what happens in the workforce
  • Independence and confidence grows
  • Motivation to follow a chosen career paths can increase
  • Career options can be explored

Each year, our Year 10 students are expected to participate in work experience as it is an integral part of the career education program. It usually takes place in the last week of term two.

Message for Year 9 Students

It's time to start thinking about where you'd like to do work experience next year.

Some occupations are highly competitive, therefore positions for work experience often fill-up early.

Students considering VCAL are encouraged to participate in two weeks of work experience before entering the program, to strengthen the skills required when employed as an apprentice or trainee.

Tips for Finding Work Experience:

  • Ask parents, relatives and family friends for help and advice on securing work experience.
  • Google businesses in your local area
  • Prepare a script of what you need to ask
  • Create a resume and covering letter
