Middle School - Year 7 to 9

The Masked Teacher: Competition Winners

Last week the Middle School ran 'The Mask Competition' and it was great to see so many students, particularly our year 7s have a guess at who the staff member behind the mask might be!

We are pleased to announce the following winners:

  • Year 7 Kelly S
  • Year 8 George T
  • Year 9 Tate N

These students know the staff at DSC very well! They will each receive a gift voucher as their prize.

Virtual Info Night: In Review

On Monday, 10 August, the Middle School team ran our first virtual information night – what an experience! It was encouraging to see so many families log on to receive more information about subject selections for Year 9 as well as the Year 9 program in general. Families heard about the opportunities that Year 9 has to offer, and received instructions on which subjects they were required to select.

Ms Fiona Cowan, Head of English, described the different English subjects that we have on offer and how students can pick the right English for them. Ms Cathy Gucciardo explained our amazing MYSELF program and the wonderful opportunities that are offered for students to develop their independence and immerse themselves in our community. Mr Simon Cross discussed the range of art electives on offer, and Mrs Kelly Spiteri was able to show us an example of what the subject selection process would look like. Thank you to all who attended and for the wonderful questions that were asked.

It was great to see that so many parents and students are invested in their education and want to make sure that they are selecting the best subjects for them!

If you would like any further details about the subject selection process or a specific subject, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s DiSCovery teacher, or the relevant person listed above.

Year 8s: What are you looking forward to next year?

Mrs Spiteri, Middle School Leader, shares responses from students about their feelings going into Year 9 next year.

Cait R (8A)

"Many people would say they are most looking forward to seeing their friends. I too am excited to see my friends, but most of all, I am excited for the new opportunities in year nine.

"For example, the MYSELF program provides the opportunity to investigate different occupations. This program gives students the chance to experience what their future could be, and provides insights into activities they may want to pursue later in life, such as basketball, cooking or writing just to name a few.

"Since we never know what the future holds, having something to look forward to that could also benefit our future offers a sense of comfort and security. This is something we all need, especially during this tough time. In short, I am most looking forward to the gateways of opportunities being opened to us next year.

Sebastien G (8E)

"I'm excited to choose my own subjects. I think this shows that the teachers trust students a bit more to make their own decisions. It makes me feel like I'm getting more responsibility and trust."

Joshua F (8J)

"I'm glad that we are being given an opportunity to participate in subjects that suit us and are more enjoyable for us."

Courtney J (8E)

"I am looking forward to completing the MYSELF units, which are completely different to the traditional curriculum. I am also excited to learn more about science and maths."

Romas M (8D)

"What I’m looking forward to in year 9 is having new electives, doing the MYSELF program and getting to experience new things."
