Everyone's favourite DSC pups, brothers Ziggy and Bowie, celebrated their second birthdays this week!

Despite having an 'iso' birthday, they made the most of their special day.

Ziggy's mum Mrs Miller took her perfect pooch on a nice walk around their local lake, whilst also giving him some colourful new toys for being such a good boy and friend to many at DSC.

Meanwhile Mrs McGee said that Bowie took it extra easy on his big day, relaxing at home with plenty of cuddles from her sons between their online classes.

Ziggy and Bowie are missing seeing students at the College, and it will be a great day once we are all back together again at Donnie. In the meantime, you can catch up with the dogs' antics via their Instagram page @ziggybowie_dsc.

DSC Celebrates Science Week

Students across DSC celebrated National Science week by exploring the 2020 theme, Deep Blue: innovations for the future of our oceans.

The theme embraces the innovative technologies, capabilities and skills needed to achieve economic, environmental and social sustainability of our oceans. It features insights and inquiries into workable solutions that generate healthy oceans, healthy world economies and healthy communities.

During the week, students immersed themselves in the fascinating world of marine science. This included a virtual incursion from the 'Marine Team' to discover more about ocean sustainability and technology, plus an at-home science scavenger hunt involving riddles and puzzles.

Earlier this year, DSC students from years 7-9 worked on a range of science projects from posters to creative writing tasks on the STS Deep Blue Oceans theme. Students were captivated by many factors about our oceans. From the vast areas of oceans to the impact of oceans on weather patterns on our planet. Students used their creative, analytical and research skills to design futuristic underwater houses for humans to live in, underwater equipment and aquaculture farms.

Please watch the below video made by one of our past DSC students, Tiffany D, featuring her inspirational educational journey and passion to save our oceans.

Australian Science Olympiad Exams

Sitting the Australian Science Olympiad Exams is the first step in being selected to represent Australia at the International Science Olympiads.

The Australian Science Olympiad Exams tests students’ knowledge, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. DSC is holding the exams in the disciplines of Biology, Chemistry and Physics for students studying these subjects at Year 11 and 12.

The exams last two hours and are carried out online under strict examination conditions.

Students who sit the exams receive a certificate indicating their performance with a grade. Individual student marks and rankings will not be made available. Based on their performance in the Australian Science Olympiad Exams, students are invited to attend the Australian Science Olympiads Summer School. This enrichment program is an opportunity for students to further extend themselves in their discipline, connect with subject experts, and develop new friendships with like-minded student from across the country.

DSC Year 11 and 12 Science students who signed up for the Australian Science Olympiad Competition will be competing later this month.

There will be 26 students from DSC taking part in this event. This is the largest group of DSC students that will compete in the Australian Schools Olympiad and we all hope you do your best!

What is Sustainable Engineering?

Sustainable engineering takes environmental engineering concepts to the next level by looking at the interactions between technical, ecological, social, and economic systems and by avoiding shifting problems from one area to the other.

Sustainability means living well within the ecological limits of a finite planet. More than ever, engineers need to find holistic and effective solutions to protect our vital life support systems and, at the same time, meet the needs of a growing human population.

Concepts such as life cycle thinking, industrial ecology and sustainable systems engineering are important elements in the education and work practice of a sustainable engineer.

Please watch the below video made by one of our past DSC students, Natasha D,  and her eagerness and commitment to work on projects to save our terrestrial environment, using sustainable engineering methods.

Science Week Scavenger Hunt

As part of Science Week celebrations, STEAM Club participated in an online scavenger hunt organised by our STEAM Student Leader Betty Z (pictured right).

Students had 20 minutes to consider the clues and run back and show the rest of the club their findings.  Students used initiative and inventive ways to illustrate the various clues required.  Well done to Nefeli who was first to finish in a time of 10 minutes!
