In Times of Uncertainty and Unpredictability

Now more than ever, we are discovering that uncertainty and unpredictability are a part of life. It’s not possible to be absolutely certain about what happens in the future. We also know how uncomfortable it feels being in a place of limbo as a result of uncertainty. All of us have different levels of tolerance to uncertainty and research shows that a low tolerance leads to excessive worry, overestimating negative outcomes of future events and underestimating our ability to cope. It’s also tiring, causes great levels of anxiety and can interfere with our day to day functioning.  Increasing our tolerance to uncertainty and unpredictability takes time and continued practice but involves: increasing our awareness of our tolerance levels; questioning the need for certainty; accepting uncertainty where we can as well, as embracing and experimenting with it. Be patient and kind to yourself in the process.

Fitwell

2020 has been a challenging year for everyone and circumstances have made it even more important for us all to stay connected and, for those who are able, to be willing to support those around us. Despite the current lockdown period the Wellbeing Team along with Learning Enhancement have been able to continue with personal development group, Fitwell.

Approximately 12 students have been participating in Fitwell, a six to eight-week group program that takes a holistic approach to promoting positive social/emotional and physical health. Throughout the program, students have the opportunity to:

  • Build resilience through G.E.M principles: Gratitude - Empathy - Mindfulness.
  • Explore and establish identity through examination of values, morals and beliefs.
  • Build self-confidence whilst identifying strengths, setting goals and exploring the idea of projecting and attracting positivity into one’s environment.
  • Promoting physical health through active games and physical activity.

Teens and Social Media

Parents and guardians often feel that social media is a challenging area to discuss and manage with their children. Here is a fantastic article from the eSafety Commissioner to assist with supporting, understanding, assisting and monitoring social media for our young people. This can further help us assist them to navigate any challenging or negative situations and ensure they are using social media positively and in a beneficial way.
