History of Sandy Bay

Throughout the term, Year 3 students discovered that each owner of 361 Sandy Bay Road made important contributions to the city of Hobart and the community of Sandy Bay.

The students have been researching information about the history of Lauramont - 361 Sandy Bay Road Sandy Bay, from the Tasmanian Aboriginal people (the muwinina people) who were the traditional and original owners of the land to the current owners, Mount Carmel College which was founded by the Sisters of Charity.

The Lord Family bought the land in 1817 from John and Elizabeth Hall and owned the land until it was purchased by Isobel Travers and Audrey Morphett  (who started Fahan School) in 1937. They sold the land to the Sisters of Charity in 1944.

Interestingly, the Lord Family owned the land for over 118 years. Octavius Lord, the eighth son of James Lord built the homestead named Lauramont in 1889 for his wife Ida and their three sons, Clive, Darrel and Athol Lord.  David Avenue is named after Octavius’ grandfather David Lord and Earl Street is named after Clive Erroll Lord, Octavius' eldest son, Erroll, being changed to Earl. Quorn Street is named after Quorn Hall, a large property in the Midlands once owned by James Lord, David Lord's son.

During our research, Ruby Jager discovered that she is related to Ida Lord - Octavius’ wife, who lived at Lauramont, had her three sons at Lauramont and died there in 1937.  Ruby is pictured here with a photograph of her great, great, great, Uncle Octavius Lord.

Year 5 White

Mrs Weeding, a drama teacher at the Hutchins School, and her Year 12 Drama Production class, challenged the students in Year 5 White to learn one of their favourite drama games. The boys sent down a video of themselves playing the game "Wha", but there was a catch. They did not tell us how to play, they only showed us how they play. So, the 5W girls watched the video and figured out the rules to the game. Now, it is one of our favourite games, too. Can you figure out how to play from our video?
