My reflection on recent comic strips and the messages they portray speaks directly into the needs for the adults in children's lives to take responsibility for the quality and quantity of time that they are being entertained by screens.

With the digital age now allowing connections with loved ones via a screen, online gaming and devices that can access the internet at anytime, it is important to ensure that the quality and content of what your child is viewing is age appropriate and safe.

"There is evidence to show that quality screen content can enhance child's learning, especially if it sparks their imagination and follows their interests."  (eSafety Commissioner)

So, how do you choose quality content?  The concept of windows, mirrors and magnifying classes can assist you with this.  Feel free to click on this link to read more on this concept and for practical tips on how to choose content.

The Department of Health recommends that children between 2-5 years of age be limited to 1 hour of access to screens per day.  With children of this age requiring 11-13 hours of sleep per night to support executive functioning throughout the day, limiting screens an hour before bedtime is recommended.
