From the Chaplain

With Father’s Day not too long ago I thought it was a good time to reflect on this special role of ‘dad’. With the busyness of life we probably forget to appreciate all they do for us. On the flip side I wonder how dad’s go in the role of encourager and supporter of their kids. As a dad I often wonder if I am doing all the right things and if I am hitting the mark for my kids in what they need from me as a dad. I know that traditionally us guys aren’t known for reading manuals and instructions but in this case I would definitely make an exception. Parenting is a really difficult task for both dads and mums and a task best done with a community of people around us. Apart from getting advice and support, some of the best parts of parenting in community is sharing the funny and not so funny moments and realising that you are not alone in it all. Parenting can feel like you’re always on the move, making decisions on the fly and never having enough time to have the conversations you need to. Don’t forget to take time to enjoy the funny parts of parenting life and grab a coffee with a friend to share some of your stories. Here's one we could relate to bellow.

After an explosive argument with our mother, my little brother pasted a sign reading “I hate Mom” on the door to his room, and slammed it shut. My dad, a school psychologist, came home to this standoff. “I’ll take care of it,” he said, then went into my brother’s room. Minutes later, Dad came out. “He doesn’t hate you anymore,” he reassured. Sure enough, my brother had crossed out “Mom” on his sign. It now read “I hate Dad.” —Michele Pecoraro

This is a funny little story which can sum up parenting for us at times, I hope you enjoyed it and thankfully these times of frustration are often short lived.
