Principal's Message

As 2019 draws to a close I would like to thank our students, our parents, our community and our staff for making this year such a productive and enjoyable one at Lake Illawarra High.

Once again this year has flown by. They say that time flies when you are busy and that has certainly been the case for our staff and students this year. Our dedicated and committed staff continue to amaze me as they reach the best academic, social, vocational and emotional outcomes for our students. One of the Departments' key values is that every child is known, cared for and valued all I can say is that Lake Illawarra High is leading the charge in this area.

The vast array of programs and support offered by our staff ensures that all students have the best possible chance for success. We have continued to invest in professional learning opportunities for staff. Over the course of the last two terms we have had staff volunteer to be part of Quality Teaching Rounds where staff observe each other as they teach and provide feedback against a specific criteria to improve classroom practice.

Last week saw the conclusion of our transition program, where we hosted Warilla North Primary and Mt Warrigal Primary Year 6 classes for three weeks. This is the second year we have tried this and we look forward to expanding this in 2020 with the focus on making students comfortable with our school procedures and setting. It was encouraging to see how comfortable the students became and I’m sure it will assist them in starting Year 7 in 2020.

On behalf of all staff here at Lake Illawarra High, I would like to wish all families a happy and safe festive season and we look forward to working with our community in 2020.

Regards

Chris Meizer

Deputies' Desk

Hello to all students, parents, carers and staff. Once again Term 4 has ended at a frantic pace and I am sure that all of our staff and students are looking forward to a well-deserved break to recharge the batteries to get ready for an exciting year of learning ahead.

We have had a busy term filled with many student academic and sporting achievements. I would like to congratulate all our students who have represented our school with pride this term and year, as well as the staff who have supported our kids, so they have the opportunity to represent our school.

Last week Mr McAndrew, Mr Price and the SRC team organised our annual colour run. This was a great event where we raised money for our SRC, so they will be able to continue the great work they do for our school.

On the 9th of December, we had our year 7 2020 Orientation day and evening. It is always great to see excited faces who are eager to take that big step into High School life. Thank you to all our staff who were involved in the day, your help in organising and running lessons is much appreciated. Term 4 has been a very successful transition time for our year 6 students, as we have had many of them up to our school over the term completing many different activities. In particular I would like to farewell our Warilla North and Lake South School students who have spent the past few weeks working with us, I hope your time here has been fun and we look forward to seeing you and all our future 2020 year 7 students next year. I would also like to thank Mr Chaseling, our Transition Advisor, for his efforts with this very successful program, which he will also write about in his report in this Newsletter.

Last Monday our school held our annual Presentation evening, which recognises the outstanding academic excellence and achievements of our students in 2019. The Presentation evening was again a very professionally organised and run event and I would like to thank Mrs Hudson and her team (Ms Velthius, Ms Barker, Ms Voorwindon, Ms Mitchell, Mr Plumb and Mr Thistlewaite) for their outstanding organisation for this event, well done.

Finally I would like to wish all our families and the Lake Learning community a Merry Christmas and a safe and Happy New Year. It is always a pleasure to work with you all in providing our kids the best opportunity for success and I look forward to working with you all in 2020.
