Year 4 News

In reading we have been doing critiquing. We have learnt that critiquing is when you give your opinion or rating of a book/text. We have been critiquing different stories leading up to critiquing our favourite book.

In writing we have been doing information reports. Each student has chosen a country from with South America or Africa to research. We have made up creative sub titles and headings and have been working on writing our paragraphs.

In maths we have been working with decimals. We are using the vertical algorithm to add and subtract decimal numbers. We have been doing lots of worded problems in our learning centres.

In PBL (project based learning) we are making an island in Minecraft. We have learnt about all the different climate types in the world and we are researching things we need to make our island liveable.

In week 8, we are off to camp and we can’t wait!

Literacy

The Grade Five’s have been exploring the different components of how to write an Informational text. They have really enjoyed learning how to research true facts for their informational reports and how to distinguish the difference between real and false information on the internet.

Mathematics

In mathematics this term the students have been exploring different types of angles in Geometry. They have learnt how to correctly use a protractor and compare different shapes using the angles.

The students have recently started to understand probability, through understanding the different language associated with the certainty of events, such as unlikely, likely, certain and impossible.

They have been investigating how they can form predictions and justify why an event is more likely to occur than another event. They have thoroughly enjoyed the hands-on activities such as coin toss’, spinners and card games.

Humanities

The students’ have been extremely busy researching their local community-Caroline Springs and the different local business’ within the community. They have been exploring the different data available to them on the Census Data website and finding out aspects about Caroline Springs such as the average age, demographics, incomes etc. They are then using this data to assist them to develop an idea for their own business.

Colour Run

On Wednesday 30th November the students all competed in the Brookside colour run! The students had a fantastic day encouraging each other to keep running and not give up!

Here is a review of the day by some students in 5B

2019 Colour Run was on Wednesday 20th November. The Prep to Year 8’s competed in the colour run and the year 9’s had a lot of fun spraying us with water and different coloured paints. We started the run all wearing white clothing and finished the run covered in brightly coloured paints!

We had to choose to run or walk. Most of us tried our best to run but if we got tired we started walking.

It was such a great and enjoyable experience for us all and we would love to do it again!”

We also interviewed some other students in other year levels about the day.

Teagan  in 3D: ‘It was a lot of fun and I would totally do it again!”

Jayde 3D: “it was interesting because I haven’t done it before so it was refreshing to try something new!”

We really hope Brookside will continue to hold this event every year!
