Dear Brooksiders!

What an action packed few weeks we have had!

New Appointment to Principal Team

We would like to welcome Karen Jackson to the Principal Class team at Brookside College. Karen has been a dedicated and hardworking member of staff for almost 10 years, and we know that her addition to the team will be welcomed by all.

After many changes this year, we are pleased to announce the final composition of the Principal Team:

Violeta Dellidis - College Principal

Karen Jackson - Acting Assistant Principal Prep-2

Brooke Gillis - Assistant Principal Year 3-6

Keda Meagher - Assistant Principal Year 7-9

Colour Run

We held our first ever Colour Run event and boy was it a lot of fun! On a glorious sunny morning, the Colour Run began with our Prep students running first. There were smiles and squeals of laughter as students were covered by a sea of colour! As the day progressed and students from each year level had their chance to run, those screams of joy and laughter continued, even amongst staff who participated (not sure who had more fun…the students or the teachers!). Thank you to Demi Geary and Robert Lake for organising such a successful and brilliant event, and thank you also to the many parents and family members who came out to cheer on our students. A collective effort of $5500 was raised and will go towards PE equipment. We hope that this is the beginning of a wonderful annual tradition!

Year 1 Stay Late

As part of the camping transition program at Brookside, the Year 1 students participated in the annual stay late which saw them engaged in fun activities at school until 6pm. Students shared many laughs with their friends as they participated in rotational activities, ate pizza for dinner and finished off the evening with a disco. Thank you to Manisha Saini, the Year 1 teachers and the many helpers for the fun filled evening!

Prep Transition

Friday 1st November was the first of three Prep Transition mornings organised to support our new Preps starting at Brookside College next year. Whilst there were some nervous faces, many of these turned to excitement when the children walked into the Prep classrooms. The morning was filled with lots of fun activities such as singing, sharing a book together and cutting & pasting, and finished off with smiles, stories to share and their very own Brookside College drink bottle to use next year!

We thank all of the staff who have supported these sessions, and thank all parents who attended the information sessions in the library.

Year 3 Camp

Last week the Year 3 students left for a 3 day camping experience to Log Cabin Camp in Creswick. Although the weather was cold, it didn’t deter them from having a wonderful time with their friends. Students participated in the giant swing, canoeing, archery, flying fox and team building activities. The delicious food was also a highlight for many of the students. Upon arrival back at school there were many tired faces, but the memories that were created will last forever! Thank you to the Year 3 teachers and all the staff who attended and helped to make this camp experience such a positive one for the students!

HOL End of Year Celebration

Last Thursday was a special day for the students involved in HOL café, tech and trade, as they came together to share and celebrate all of their achievements this year. Students showcased their projects to their family and friends while enjoying a BBQ dinner together. We are so proud of their efforts, and congratulate the HOL students on their achievements this year. Well done! Thank you also to Gretel Van Wyngarden and the HOL teachers for their hard work with the students this year.

Hayfever and Asthma

Melbourne Spring has certainly tested us already with ‘Four Seasons in a Day’! There have been some beautiful days and also some very wild windy ones, which have not been good for the students and staff who suffer from hayfever or asthma. It is extremely important that parents have their child’s asthma plan up to date, and inform the school’s health centre of any changes. We also recommend that families download the “Melbourne Pollen Count” app, to assist you in making decision about when to give hayfever medicine to students prior to coming to school.
