Year 9 Fast Fashion
‘Make it fast and make it fashionable’ is the hallmark of the fast Fashion industry where the best of season showcased on the catwalks of France can be made available within days and weeks rather than delayed an entire season.
Our students are learning that the features of such garments are fairly basic – from the block pattern cutting out, to elasticised waistbands and patch pockets. To create individuality in such garments calls for imagination in the use of woven fabrics, pocket styles, seam and hem types.
Knowing the basics of woven fabric and their prints is one key to designing. Did you know that patterns can be ‘one-way’, ‘two-way’ or ‘multidirectional’? Take a look at these:
Our students are learning about the effects of this principle on their garment designs, the pattern layout and cutting and the flow-on influence on the amount of fabric needed for a garment
Examples from our recent lessons: A student-made simple bag using a one-way print design and a cutting layout for shorts using a multi-directional print.
Our students are currently selecting their fabrics to suit their cutting layouts for their choice of either a Fast Fashion skirt, OR Shorts OR PJ bottoms. We look forward to seeing these showcased at our Art & Technology exhibition this year.
