"Celebrating my story, as vital to who we are"

A little over a week from writing this article we came together as a community to celebrate Harmony Day. During the course of Harmony Day we were entertained by the wonderful talents of the St Therese’s Primary School’s Japanese Drummers, some fantastic cultural dancing from our students of Pacific Island communities and from India, we heard the inspiring stories of four brave students who shared a little of their stories, we enjoyed some amazing culinary treats from around the world put on by our VCAL students and most importantly we heard from College Captains Talia and Brendon on what harmony can actually look like in a school.

The theme for the assembly was “Celebrating my story, as vital to who we are” with a particular emphasis on the fact that harmony is not dependent upon foregoing one’s own story, culture, values or perspective but rather that harmony comes when we celebrate each other’s own story and embrace that uniqueness as something that brings us together and makes us stronger rather than sets us apart. Where, through open dialogue, a willingness to listen and learn, and a genuine care for each other, we forge a steadfast community who support each other in times of trouble instead of taking the approach of 'every person for themselves'.

The strength of a harmonious community is not tested when life is going well and the roses are blooming; the character of the community is seen when the wind blows hard and times are testing. As a reasonably new member to the St. Peter’s College community it warms my heart to see our staff, students and families coming together with a level of harmony, to make the best in difficult times; to remain calm and balanced in the face of the unknown. As we journey through these uncharted waters I encourage all members of the community to keep open lines of dialogue and to continue to work with the college leadership, staff, students and families to bring about the very best for each member of our fantastic St. Peter's College community, guided in a way by the words of St. Peter to 'Be not afraid…'
