Around the Classes - Year 2

Religion

During Term 2, students will explore the meaning of The Ascension, Pentecost and The Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary and why these are important events in the church. They will explore Good Shepherd Sunday and how just as a shepherd loves and cares for his sheep and leads them to safety, Jesus loves and cares for us, and we follow him to God the Father.

Literacy

Students will participate in a variety of activities that will develop their knowledge, understanding and skills in listening, reading, viewing, speaking, writing and creating.

 

Reading

In Reading, students will participate in a variety of activities to meet their needs including:

  • Reading orally with fluency and expression 
  • Sequencing and retelling events in a text
  • Understanding and decoding words
  • Identifying nouns, verbs and adjectives 
  • Developing reading comprehension skills

Writing

In writing students will participate in a variety of activities to meet their needs including:

  • Weekly spelling sound (SMART Spelling)
  • Handwriting focusing on correct letter formation and positioning 
  • Compound and complex sentences
  • Using nouns, verbs and adjectives
  • Various writing types

Speaking and listening

Through a variety of activities such as: oral responses in class, role-play and oral presentations students will further develop the following skills:

  • Audible voice
  • Clear articulation
  • Confident presentation
  • Focused listening
  • Questioning

Maths

In Mathematics, students will develop an understanding of mathematical concepts and fluency with processes. They will be able to pose and solve problems and reason in Number and Algebra and Measurement and Geometry.

Inquiry

CHANGE: Stimulating Science

Students will consider changes that we experience in our lives through the lenses of biology, earth and space science, chemistry, and physics. They will make predictions and scientific observations throughout the unit. Students will show what they have learnt by identifying 'science' in their classroom and recording their understanding of each branch of science.
