Junior School, South Plympton

From the Head of Junior School, South Plympton

What an eventful term we have just finished! I trust that the children were all able to have a good break. They have certainly returned to school this term rejuvenated and keen to re-engage with their learning.

Holidays are an important time to play, reset and relax. I can’t stress enough the importance of unstructured (preferably outdoor) play for the children’s development. In fact, research shows that when children play in nature; in green spaces, it is particularly important for development and wellbeing. With the amazing weather we were blessed with over the break, I do hope there were many opportunities to explore the outdoors with your children.

When reflecting on Term 1, a highlight for me was Grandparents’ Day. It is always so exciting to see multi-generations together, and that special bond between a grandparent and their grandchild is something incredibly special. Our classrooms were bustling with energy and excitement, as the happy faces were clearly evident. The picnic morning tea was another enjoyable time when the lawned area was full of family groups. We were extremely fortunate that the weather held-off for us on the day!

Having the opportunity to sing or play a musical instrument is important and to do this to an audience of 300 people was quite a treat for our young students. We are always looking for ways to improve our events and I would appreciate any feedback either directly from our special visitors or the parent community.

Cross Country was an event for our Year 3 – 6 students and once again we were blessed with near perfect weather. Every extra-curricular activity that we offer enables different students to shine. Cross Country is one such event when we discover some talented distance runners. It is rewarding to see the children push themselves beyond what they believe they are capable of. Although Cross Country may not be the easiest event for the community to connect with as spectators, we highly encourage you to attend as many events as possible.

The enthusiastic parents on the sidelines always bring a smile to the faces of our students and create a lively and supportive atmosphere. Please check the upcoming events and plan to be at as many as possible. With no restrictions now, we really want to engage with our community at every possible opportunity.

Our first Coffee Connect is on Friday 5th May (Friday, Week 1). This is as simple as giving yourself an extra 20 minutes or so to stop after drop-off and chat to a staff member or other parents over a casual coffee before you rush to your Friday busyness. Connection to the school community is a significant factor in your child’s success at school. This is one of the many opportunities to do this.

Looking at the next couple of weeks we have our Mothers’ Day stall at the end of Week 2. More details will come from our organising committee.

The Foundation students’ Water Safety Week is held in Week 3. We hope that many Foundation parents will be able to watch the children develop in their confidence in water. Also, in Week 3, our very excited Year 6 students head to Kangaroo Island for their three-night / four-day camp.

I wish you all the best and God’s blessing during the following term.
