Kids Corner

The Kids Corner section of this fortnight’s newsletter have been written by some of our Year 6 students – I trust everyone enjoys reading their poems and narratives just as much as I have.

Hriday – A poem

Paralysed
Numb and immobilised
Cursed figures dark and daunting drift forward to seize my soul
This is terror
My eyes locked by an unnatural force in place
Can’t cry for help
Can’t hide
Can’t scream.

Daivik – A Narrative

The world froze. Five seconds left on the clock. The ball was in my hands. I was completely unguarded as defenders scrambled to match my speed. We were in the NBA finals against our biggest rivals the Golden State Warriors. A win here would mean that the Lakers rule for another year. We needed three points to win. Just three.

The whole stadium was roaring with fervour for the home team, us. All the lights were brighter than ever and the trophy glinted, waiting to be lifted. My teammates were screening the opponents, giving me a clear chance to shoot. The clock counted down. 3… I jumped. 2.. Fade away, release. 1… Land clean. The ball made the sweetest sound as it swished clean through the net. Three pointer fade away swish! We…
‘’Honey time to get ready for tuition’’ my mum’s voice came kind but stern at the same time, dragging my reluctant mind back to reality.

‘’Yes mum’’ I answered back, deflated at the fact that my perfect dream ended so short. I saw the paper ball which I had thrown into my recycle bin. My club basketball trophy still glinted in the sunlight. Maybe I would make it to the NBA someday? Who knows?

Yuven – A Narrative

My eyes opened. It was as dark as night. But, when my eyes open they never close again until the next night. I took off and flew away from my nest. My wings beaded slowly and swiftly as I sliced through the air. I always wished I could go faster than those big flying tin cans. But, alas. I was just a bird doing awkward things. I thought there was nothing else to being a bird than just flying, finding long juicy worms to eat and swooping people. Right now at the start of the day I had to find some food for myself. I headed towards the city park. Every day I went there to find my worms. It was the best place as the worms there were so long and there is this really nice lady who always gives us seeds. I quickly finished my morning routine and headed back to the nest with a full stomach.

Back at the nest, the next thing I had to do for the day was protect the nest even though I had no other birds in my tree. A person came under the tree and he sat on a bench. Anger rushed through me, and it surged all the way to my beak. I gave out an angry croak. The man didn’t move. Then I started to chatter harshly. The man looked up. I stared at him in the eye waiting for him to break eye contact so I can let myself fall and dive to his head beak first. Then he did. I folded my wings and fell out of the tree. Then I spread them and glided down. SCRATCH! My beak nicked his bald head as I pulled up going back to the nest. The next events were inevitable. The man would yell in pain and run away… and he did just that.

Soon night fell and I was getting comfortable in the nest. Just as I was about to close my eyes and rest for the day ahead, I heard something. I looked down. It was the same man with seeds in his hand. A little midnight snack would do no harm. But, why did he come back. Is he still not scared of me? Well, I’ll show him. But, first of all those seeds! Yum! I thought to myself. I dived down into the man’s hand and pecked at the seeds. Suddenly everything went black. I wondered what happened. Then I heard a zip.
I was trapped in a bag.

But, what could I do? I waited for the bag to open. When it did, I found myself surrounded by rectangle papers neatly stacked. Suddenly I heard a click. It was the man. He picked up a handful of the weird looking papers, put them in a bag and went outside. This kept on going for days. Soon, I was used to it. Then the next day the man did not get up. Instead he stared me down. Was I doing something wrong? I thought to myself as the man kept on staring at me. Suddenly I realised what I had to do. I picked up a paper on my feet and flew out the door, on my way I also realised that the papers are used to send messages. Suddenly in a high-rise apartment I saw someone wave at me. I went to them and landed on the ledge of the window. They took the letter and sent me off. So this is what the man wants me to do. I kept on doing that. I realised I could do so much more. I could be useful. In addition, no more poking and swooping people and I always get a decent amount of food as a reward. My entire life just changed because of that single man and I realised my potential.
