1C

By Gordan Gerada

The classroom was buzzing with excitement as we completed our recyclable mini city for our Inquiry question: “How can we connect to different places.” Over the term, we were very lucky to have guest speakers from the police department, firefighters, paramedics, Woolworths, Australia Post and Bank of Melbourne.

Students have taken the knowledge they have gained from our guest speakers with the purpose of understanding their roles in our community. They were then tasked to use recyclable materials and use their imagination to create a city based on the multiple places they have connected to. 1C did a fantastic job negotiating resources, supplies and their creative ideas to create a magnificent mini city.

Here are some highlights and reflections from the unit:

Austin: “I made a road for the mini city. Roads are important for our community because it connects buildings together and is a safe place for cars to travel.”

Hasiru, Vihan and Deana: “We created the Glen Shopping Centre. The shopping centre is important because that’s where lots of shops are, and we go there to buy things that we need like food.”

Prayag and Evelyn: “We made Cooper’s house because we connected to the theme of vising a friend’s house. The building is a mansion and even has a helicopter landing pad.”

Tasmira and Ngo Chi: “We created a police station for our mini city. The police station is important as they help our community stay safe with jails.”

Sophie and Johana: “We build a fire station; it has sirens on top and a door that opens. A fire station is important as the firefighters help put out fires.”
