What's been happening in 3GR?

Mathematics

We have had a great term extending our learning in all three strands of numeracy (Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry and Statistics and Probability).

Money and Financial Matters

Year Three’s created an on-line shopping site and then had fun placing orders on-line and paying for them using Australian currency. Students accurately calculated transactions and worked out the correct change (even from bargain discounted prices). 

Problem Solving using fractions

We had great fun problem solving with fractions. We brainstormed many ideas to solve the doughnut problem as a class.  

Problem: How can you divide the doughnut into 8 equal pieces using only 3 cuts with a knife? 

It was great to see Carter and Mick challenge Mrs Gerecke with our fraction problem and share their learning. The best part was eating doughnuts at the end of the lesson.

Inquiry

Year 3's participated in a Science incursion to finish off our Living and Non-Living topic. We looked at living and non-living things under a microscope and then classified them into groups. Finally, we all participated in creating a worm farm which will now be used in the Sacred Heart Garden. What a great term of learning!

Prep News

Excursion

On Monday, the Preps went on an excursion to the Royal Botanic Gardens. We learnt about how nature keeps us healthy. 

First we went on the bus. It was fun! We arrived at the gardens and ate our lunch. Next, we met our leader, Kim. She took us all through the gardens. The first place we visited was the ‘Herb Garden’. We smelt all the delicious herbs and made pot pourri to take home. It smelt wonderful! 

After that we walked through the Fern Gully forest. It was beautiful and peaceful. We saw some black swans at the pond and they came right up to us to say hello! Finally we made a special piece of art out of nature before we came back to school. We had lots of fun on our excursion!!!

Buddy Activity

The Preps celebrated Footy Colours Day with their Year 6 buddies today, enjoying some fun footy activities. 

Year 4 Experiment-Egg Drop

In science, the Year 4 students completed an egg drop experiment. They needed to create a holder for a raw egg that would protect it when dropped from the top of the senior adventure playground. When building the holder, they needed to think about the forces that would affect the egg in motion – gravity, air resistance and momentum. Each of these forces would determine if the egg survived or splattered into pieces once it hit the ground.

Year 5 Buddy Visit

On the 15 September, our buddies from Petit Kinder came over to Sacred Heart and had a tour. My buddy was Daniel (who is coming to this school next year) and at first he cried, but then he started to open up and feel comfortable. We visited 14 different locations. We started off at the office which was where I gave my speech. All the Year 5's did a speech about one thing and one location on this tour, and I think I did quite well. We showed them the Church, four square courts, Tuckshop, Hall and then our classroom, where we gave our cards to our buddies and showed them all the different parts of a classroom, like my desk and whiteboard. We then went to the library where we read a book to our buddies. I read Daniel the Giant Peach by Gus Gordon. After that, we went to the Big Adventure Playground and we had a play on the equipment. Next we showed them the MPR, Art room and Tennis Courts. Then we went to the Oval where we played a bit of soccer and ran around. When we got on the oval Daniel was zooming because he loved it. Finally, we went on the Basketball Courts and then the Junior Adventure Playground, where the tour ended. My buddy will hopefully be my buddy in Year 6. I am really hoping to see them again!
