Religious Education

All students attending St Louis de Montfort's Aspendale have the right to feel safe. The care, safety and wellbeing of children and young people is a fundamental responsibility of all within our school.                                                                                     Marylene Douglas

Baptism is the first sacrament.

It is a sacrament of initiation, followed by Eucharist and Confirmation.

A sacrament is a visible sign of God’s love and grace.

In Baptism, we are welcomed into the Catholic Church.

Parents are the most significant people in nourishing a child’s faith. Faith is a gift from God that is encouraged by example and instruction; it is both lived and learned. When parents present their child for baptism, they are making a commitment to bring their child up as a loving member of our Christian community by loving God and their neighbour.

By being baptised we become sons and daughters of God. Our special relationship with God calls us to live the gospel values of love, forgiveness, compassion, hope and joy. We live these values out through our choices and interactions with one another. In this sense we are fulfilling Jesus’ new commandment, “that you love one another…just as I have loved you.” (John 13:34)

On Wednesday night the Year 1 families were invited to deepen their understanding of baptism by attending a Parent/Child Workshop at St Louis' Church. We were all welcomed by the students singing a beautiful and appropriate song called, "Welcome to the Family." Whilst Father Andrew chatted with the parents, the children were exploring the story of Jesus' Baptism.

Father Andrew then conducted a mock baptism to explain the significance of all of the elements of this special sacrament. The students learned that God has called them by name and their parents and Godparents are there to guide them on their faith journey.

The symbol of water is used to signify that we can cleanse ourselves and enter a new life with Christ. Without water we could not survive.

Oil is a symbol of healing and strength. The white garment symbolises purity and a new beginning and finally, the candle is a symbol of Christ's light, leading us out of darkness and showing us the way.

Thank you to those who attended, hopefully it provided you with an opportunity to spend some special time with your child as they continue on their faith journey.

We look forward to celebrating Mass with all our Year 1 Families this weekend.
