3/4 BOC   Faith Life

Ms O'Connor

Last week we were so lucky to be able to go on an excursion to the Immigration Museum. This formed a special part of our RE and Inquiry unit as our focus has been ‘Walking in Someone Else’s Shoes’. At the museum we read and listened to rich and heartwarming stories about the journies that some people made to get to Australia and start a new and better life.  Our students showed curiosity in hearing the reasons why people made the decision to leave their homes, and they were able to share their own stories and reflect on how their parents, grandparents and family members came to live in Australia.

We walked through the museum and looked at timelines, videos, and artwork that reflected the decisions people had to make, and the students were fascinated to learn how immigration has been a major contributor to making Australia such a wonderful place to live.

Some comments made by students:

“People came here because they had to make a safe choice for their family…”

“I wonder what I would bring with me if me and my family had to share one suitcase…”

“We are really lucky in Australia…”

“My Grandad came here from Vietnam and he said it was really hard to leave his home…”

Our students were extremely reflective and stoic while wandering the museum, and this experience has led to many rich discussions about decisions, experiences, being empathetic, and respecting people's stories.

We traveled to and from the excursion by tram, and they left such a beautiful impression on members of the public that we received many comments about how well behaved and respectful our Trinity students are.
