Science Club

Last week in Science Club we investigated combustion reactions in the form of methylated spirits rockets. We had quite a few enthusiastic participants to watch the show too! Essentially, we attached our metho rocket to a straw and threaded some string through the straw. We then attached the string to 2 retort stands across the lab. We lit the metho rocket with a candle on a metre ruler and kept everyone away from the string. Some of the rockets really combusted well and moved very quickly along the string, along with a loud sound... and others were disappointing. It was nice to see a few new faces at Science Club this week.

At this stage Science Club will not be running in Week 9, but should be back again in Week 1 Term 3.

Market Day

On Monday Year 9 Commerce students held their ‘Market Day Stalls’, after 7 weeks of preparation. This was a great practical educational experience for the students, learning about running a business at the same time as raising money for our partner schools. A big thank you to Ms Van Riet, Mr Perry, Ms Wang, Mr Dobb and Mr Gillogly for their hard work.

Mr Simon Yue - EGBC Coordinator

Microfiction Competition Winners

Congratulations to the winners of the Microfiction Competition and thank you to all entrants. The competition concluded this week after over one hundred entries were received. Students and teachers were invited to compose a short piece of fiction totalling no more than 100 words and including specific actions and words. The stories were expertly judged by Year 12 Academic Prefects Cody Choi, Elliot Cook and Christopher Zilifian.

While the competition has ended, the work with the students' fiction is far from over. A selection of entries will be passed on to Visual Arts students who will illustrate the stories for publication in an anthology that celebrates the talented creativity of St Pius X College students and teachers. Watch this space! For now, enjoy the winning entries attached below:

Year 8 Principal's Award

Congratulations to Angus Gibson of Year 8 who received a Principal's Award at Assembly on Monday.  A Principal's Award is given when a student receives 3 Coordinator's Awards.  This equates to receiving 15 merit cards in a year.  A great achievement!
