Koorie Cultural Walk

Our year 7/8 Students during week 7 have taken part in an excursion to Point Addis where they undertook a 'Koorie Cultural Walk' to learn information about how Indigenous people, the Wadawurrung people, lived around this area. They were also able to explore the area as many of our students hadn’t been there before.

Here is a report from our students:

Zin Zin Htay Tun: The Wexford 7-8s went on an excursion to Point Addis on Friday, August 26th. We immediately strolled down to the extremely clean and beautiful beach to have our snack and do a little exploring after getting off the bus when we arrived. Many students were alarmed by a little playful dog who approached some of their faces and licked them. When everyone had finished, we returned to midway and took a different route (the nature walk). We came across signs while walking that provided details on various cultural aspects. There were different signs that contained fascinating information on local plants. We eventually arrived at a patio close to the cliff's edge after what seemed like a very long walk! After that, we returned to the beach to continue our beach activities and have our lunch. Overall, this excursion was fantastic, and I would definitely go back there in the future.

Educational Research Projects

Students have also started work on their end of term Educational Research Projects. Focusing around the overarching topic of “Water” and exploring the concepts of climate change, sustainability and renewable practices. We can’t wait to see what they produce in week 10! Here is some information from our students on what they are doing with their projects so far;

Zeinab Shirzad: In the year 7&8 community, we are working on an ERP presentation. My partner Valerie Tai, and I are working on Tidal Power. We are making a powerpoint/Google Slide presentation on it. We are researching information on how they work, where they are located,  why they exist and how they are made.
Connor Mcleod (Excerpt from his project): Have you ever wondered how Hydropower is made? There are a lot of ways to make Hydropower, but mainly created from Dams. So how is Hydropower made? Well, the water from the lake flows through the Dam's pipe also known as the “Penstock”, which gets pushed against a few fan-blades which, in turn, spins a generator that ultimately produces electricity. Most Dams are built near large lakes which have a large amount of water, more water = more electricity.

Students from year 6 to 8 were terrific in performing at the

Geelong Schools’ Music and Movement Festival.

Our Concert Band students gave feedback and this is on its own special page - check it out

Throughout the term students in Years 7 and 8 have been studying specialist subjects at Goldsworthy and the Geelong Industry Trade Training Centre (GITTC)

Here are a few photographs of students fro all campuses engaged in their work.

Year 9 Update

Year 9 featured widely on our facebook pages recently. It has been a very busy term forthem including visits to the Gordon.

Our year 9 Science classes are finishing their unit on nuclear physics, deciding “Is it worth the risk?” to have nuclear power in Australia. Students have learned about atoms, nuclear fission, power plants, ethics and writing arguments to prepare for their final assessment.

As part of their final revision, Kath our lab manager has run a demo of the chain reaction of nuclear fission, using mousetraps and poker chips. An EXPLOSIVE reaction!

The students finished the term with a Test and a fun Teachers v Year 9 game
