Year 10 News

In addition to normal curriculum activities and learning in the core subjects as well as their electives our Year 10 students have been looking at their attendance. It is amazing in this year of flu and covid  that we have 3 students with 100% attendance. In recognition of such a great result we can identify them as Kyan, Jasmine and To Mar.

90% is the college goal and we are delighted that 32 students have achieved this for the year.  Our next question was whether wintery term 3 had reductions but no  - 40 students have achieved 90% attendance this term.  Hopefully term 4 will have a further increase. Congratulations to all and a word of encouragement o all other Year 10 students to keep fit, healthy and engaged for the rest of the year.

Skyline Foundation

For a number of years now the Skyline Foundation has supported Northern Bay College students as they try to work towards further education after year 12. Year 10 students are invited to apply for a Skyline Scholarship and if successful many opportunities are available to access support.

There is a rigourous application process is involved. A number of our students have been working through the Skyline program application process since early Term 2. The Skyline program is a scholarship that works with successful students through Years 11 & 12 to support them financially, socially, academically and emotionally to assist them in achieving their career goals.

Students completed letters and application forms. If successful they had to complete online testing. Many students have moved on to interview which is the final step in the process. We have 7 students who are being interviewed. The interviews have been taking place via Zoom with Martin (General Manager) and Jigna (Program Manager). Students will find out the outcome mid October. We are so proud of all who have taken part in putting themselves forward as candidates.

BOOK WEEK IN YEAR 10 ENGLISH

To celebrate Book Week in English, some year 10 students reflected on a few of their favourite novels, only to discover that many had been placed on “banned books” lists at one time or another.  We reviewed ‘The Lord of the Flies”, ‘Where the Wild Things Are’, ‘The Giving Tree’, ‘Green Eggs and Ham’ and ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’.  Our class still love these stories and would recommend them; not ban them.

SMT (Science Math Technology)

Over Terms 2 and 3, some students at Northern Bay College wanted to be a part of the SMT (Science, Math, and Technology) program. The SMT program consisted of widening our learning of science, math and technology.  During term 2 we looked at the aspects of mining, basics of robotics and drones, centrifuge and density of liquids. In term 3 we had the incursion from CSIRO. The first few weeks we had a great team of experts come from CSIRO and we did experiments like growing bacteria and learning how they breed to get the needed genotype and phenotype of animals for testing. We looked into genetics, breeding, and learned a lot about CSIRO and what the animal technicians do. We then had the amazing opportunity to visit CSIRO and look at their facilities. We debunked a lot of myths about ‘animal testing’ and learned how they work with animals and cared for them. We looked into the life of an animal technician at CSIRO and were surprised with how many showers they take a day to make sure no diseases or bacteria are brought out to the world or taken inside their research labs. We also had a great presentation from Dr. Mark Tizard who talked about CRISPR which caught the attention of many students, mine included. Dr. Mark talked about his research at CSIRO and his dedication to stop the culling of baby male chicks with the possible help of CRISPR. This brought an insight into the science world and such an opportunity was great for the students as they chose VCE/VM subjects and possible careers. We were informed that they also provide work experience opportunities. Indeed it was great to be part of the SMT at Northern Bay College.

VCAL NEWS

The ENTERPRISE outcomes

Last week the VCAL students held a market showcasing their small businesses and selling products they had developed throughout their Enterprise class this term.  There was a range of items up for grabs, such as; baked goods, jewellery, bath bombs, dog treats and wooden items made from recycled pallet timber.

Congratulations to all students involved and thank you to everyone who visited and purchased some items.

Volunteering

Every second Thursday this term VCAL students have been involved in active volunteer work in the community.  They have regularly visited Geelong Mums where they supported the organisation by packing and cleaning donated items.  They visited the local Northside Salvation Army where they have cooked and packed food for people in need.  They have also visited our junior campuses where they have supported younger students by participating in reading, mentoring and other classroom activities.

It has been great to see students develop their personal skills and a sense of citizenship through these experiences.  Jordan Moran, leader at our Hendy campus, said that it was a “great idea that students love”. Unfortunately the program is coming to an end but that doesn't mean its the last of its kind, the VCAL cohort will have many more opportunities just like this still this year and I for one can’t wait to see what many more amazing things our young adults will do for our budding community.

Making things Happen

Our Recycle Initiative

We are very thrilled to report that Allie and Tay from senior VCAL have taken a big step in their sustainability project by ordering recycling bins for every single classroom and office. These two students have taken the first step to lead the rest of the college into becoming more eco-friendly and care more for not just our school yard, along with their homes, communities and our planet.

Planting Trees at Cowies Creek

.. was a successful activity for both us and Friends of Cowies Creek. They demonstrated to us how to correctly plant the trees as well as dig the holes out, and also helped us if we were confused. In total we planted 60 trees as a group - the trees we planted included red gum and other native trees as well as grasses. The Friends of Cowies Creek told us that in 20 years all the trees we planted will be fully grown and as big as the other trees around the creek.
The partnership was successful and we worked well when teaming up with the Friends of Cowies Creek - although in the beginning we were all a bit shy to work together and talk, throughout the day we all found ourselves becoming more talkative and even made a few jokes. We finished planting the trees quite quickly by working in a team and I was surprised as well as proud of how well we worked together and included each other. Overall, the Friends of Cowies creek were very welcoming and open minded when we asked questions. The excursion had a positive effect on us and showed how easy it is to look after our environment. VCE NEWS

Term 4 has been a big one for the VCE group. Snow Camp, the GAT and the English Trial Exam have all been highlighted over the last 10 weeks. The VCE Newsletter to parents also kicked off this Term. Every 2 weeks we let the parents ‘under the tent’ and into the VCE world with our newsletter. We have also run multiple Friday Trivia Competitions, Photo Competitions and seen our groups work through their studies.

Our amazing food studies students have been wonderful in the cooking space too.

There are only a few weeks left of formal classes for our Unit 4 students and they are working very hard at school and at home to be as successful as possible when they sit their VCE subject exam. I know we all wish them well and hope they keep focussed but not stressed.

Students undertaking Unit 2 of their studies will be sitting exams in Term 4.

The SNOW Camp was excellent in all aspects - except weather - the sun did shine but not often. However it did not dampen the spirits of the Boarders and Skiers.
