Our students talk about performing
On Wednesday 17 August the NBC Concert Band performed at Costa Hall, Deakin University Waterfront Campus. Students from all four Junior Campuses set up their instruments ready to play the music that they had been preparing for the Geelong Schools’ Music and Movement Festival. The band presented a program of three works, Blizzard Blues, Tikal and Penguin Promenade and were the opening item for the afternoon session at 1:00 PM. Congratulations, to all students who were performing in front of an audience for the first time.

Going to the Geelong Schools’ Music and Movement Festival was fun and enjoyable to do something new that I had never done before. My Nan, Pa and my friend’s Mum were in the audience at Costa Hall to watch me perform. Sitting on stage waiting for the Music Festival to start, was really hot. This was because the spot lights and stage lights were on. Playing the band music was fun. Going through the music before the performance helped me to have less mistakes on stage. I felt grateful when I heard the audience clapping and that I had done a really good performance.

I really enjoyed performing at Costa Hall alongside the other NBC band members. Sitting on stage and waiting made me feel really nervous but as soon as the band started playing, I calmed down and did my best. I think the rehearsal at Peacock Campus at the start of the day helped a lot. I made no mistakes there and none on stage. It was scary being the ‘opening act’ but I think it was good because there were no other instrumental bands performing that day. I really enjoyed seeing the other schools perform and every school chose something different, making it memorable. My favourite performance was presented by the Year 11 and 12 NBC Rock Bands, they were amazing! I think our Concert Band did a fantastic job, considering it was my first time performing on stage for an audience. I loved the experience!

The bus ride to Costa Hall was fun. I was very confident about playing all my pieces, until all the stage lights and spotlights went on. The NBC Concert Band played Blizzard Blues, Tikal and Penguin Promenade at the very start of the Music and Movement Festival. I thought I played really well and worked with the other trumpet players to do our best. After we played our pieces we returned to the ‘Green Room’ back stage to pack up our instruments. Then we had a group band photo taken and we went into the hall to be part of the audience. I liked watching all of the other schools performing on stage. I thought the younger students did a great job.

On the day of the Music Festival we started with a few hours practice at the Peacock Campus to go over our pieces for the concert. Then we went on a McHarrys bus to Costa Hall. When we arrived the ushers took us to the ‘Green Room’ back stage, where we got our instruments ready to play. A short time later, we went on stage to set up our chairs and put our music on the stands. We waited about ten minutes for the man to introduce us and announce that we were performing, Blizzard Blues, Tikal and Penguin Promenade. Once we were finished we all packed up and watched the other school performances. They were great! When the concert was finished we grabbed our instruments from the green room and left to go back to our NBC campuses. It was a great experience!

The Northern Bay Concert Band went to Costa Hall to perform and my Mum was there helping us to get organised. She also watched the band perform from the side of the stage. I sat in the front row of the band with the other clarinet players. The spotlights and stage lights made my highlighted sections of the music shine brightly. At the end of our performance we stood up to bow and the audience clapped loudly. We packed away our instruments, took a group photo then watched the other schools perform. I had fun playing at the Music Festival.

I had a great time performing at the Music Festival and specifically enjoyed hearing the NBC Year 11 Rock Band. I felt a little bit nervous but having the two hour practice helped me to feel more confident. Once we arrived at Costa Hall I had no worries. I think that we played really well on stage. Overall, it was a great experience!

On the day of the performance I was a bit scared sometimes, but not all the time. I liked playing on stage a lot and I love playing the trumpet in the band. When we started playing it was hard to hear so I listened to the other trumpet players and joined in, then it was easy. We sat and watched all of the other schools perform. The Year 11 NBC Rock Band were really good playing on the stage. I loved doing the band concert on stage at the Music Festival.

On Wednesday I really enjoyed playing at the Geelong Schools’ Music and Movement Festival. It was my first time performing in front of an audience. When we performed I was scared at first because I had made some mistakes at the rehearsal at Peacock Campus. I finally played the three band pieces correctly as I remembered it from band. I really enjoyed watching the other schools on the stage when we had finished performing.

I was excited to do the concert at the Geelong Schools’ Music and Movement Festival. It was pretty easy to play on stage at Costa Hall because it was like we were at band rehearsal. Then there were spotlights and people in the audience, listening to us play. I enjoyed watching the other schools performing when I was sitting in the audience. It was my first time playing on stage with the NBC Concert Band. I was not nervous because it wasn’t my first time on stage performing.
