Ancient Greek Journeys and Connections – Ancient History excursion

Recently, the Year 10 and 12 Ancient History students took part in an excursion to the city. We travelled to Melbourne Museum from Mitcham station to visit the Open Horizons Ancient Greek Journeys Exhibition. After our visit, we went to Melbourne Central to have lunch and then made our way to the NGV. Here we were lucky to see the new Ancient World showcase. Both of those exhibitions took us all on a journey through Ancient Greece and helped us understand the rich Greek culture from this time. All of the artefacts were breathtaking and it was such a surreal outing!

On the 21st of July, the Year 12 and Year 10 Ancient History classes embarked on their first invigorating history excursion since the pandemic began. We were fortunate enough to visit two exhibitions that displayed artefacts from our two main units of study; Ancient Egypt (Unit 3) and Ancient Greece (Unit 4). Our adventure began at the Melbourne Museum, where the Open Horizons: Ancient Greek Journeys & Connections Exhibition had come down from Sydney to grace us with their presence. We then visited the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV), where intriguing Ancient Egyptian artefacts were on display.

Visiting these two exhibitions increased our understanding of how the ancient civilisations of Egypt and Greece developed and enhanced our abilities to analyse primary sources. It also enabled us to gain further insight into how the Ancient Greeks and Egyptians lived, along with the beliefs and values they held.

Seeing material evidence in person was amazing as we got to appreciate the intricacy and detail displayed in many artefacts. We would therefore like to thank Miss Mcintosh & Mr Sabatino for organising the excursion and making it a highlight in our Year 12 VSC memories!
