Ms Gurm's Year 7 Science
Science is one of the most exciting and fun subjects, you never know what could happen ! Whenever I step into the classroom my eyes light up and I put on my thinking cap right away so I’m ready to learn… There are so many fun things to learn in science; you can work with chemicals, food, animals and much more. At the moment my class and I are learning about science safety. I like how the lab equipment works, how to use it safely and correctly. The most popular thing right now is something called the Bunsen Burner, super fun to learn about! If you learn to enjoy science as much as I do then you’ll have SO much fun.
Angleique
So far science has been really fun, we have been learning about science safety rules in a booklet with activities that help us learn science words and materials. Sometimes we look around and explore the rooms for objects/equipment and sometimes we do quizzes and crosswords about science.
Science is a great subject, it is very creative and is an exciting way to learn!

College Opening Mass
On Monday 22 February we were fortunate enough to gather as a community to formally welcome in the school year with the Opening Mass. We are very grateful to have had Fr Dillon as our celebrant. During the Mass, the staff and students stood together for a pledge of commitment. Ending the occasion, a special commissioning ceremony was conducted for the St Vincent de Paul College Conference and Year 12 College Student Leaders. The College Captains and College Vice Captains were able to concrete their dedication to leadership with the tradition of signing the book, which contains signatures of past Captains.
We are so blessed to be able to come together as a community and pray at the start of the year asking God to be with us, guide and protect us through the year. We thank the families that joined us on Zoom in this celebration.

Year 10 excursion to Spotlight
Friday 19 February was the day the Year 10 Textiles students were able to go on an excursion to Spotlight on Springvale Road. The timing was lucky as we had just finished the snap 5 day lockdown. The students spent time in the store choosing fabrics that will be suitable to make their skirts and shorts. This was an important experience as the students had to work out costing and correct measurements. The staff on duty were very patient with the 22 of us!
The students will now construct their garments by following the paper patterns under my guidance and I am looking forward to the end product.
The final products will be on display at the end of the year in our annual SHOWCASE and some will be selected for Yearbook.

Vinnies Easter Appeal
This term, the Vinnies team is already hard at work preparing for our Easter raffle. Very soon hampers will be created and students will be selling tickets to teachers and students during Pastoral and lunchtime. Money raised from the raffle will go towards the St Anthony's Tutoring Program, which will enable this volunteer group to purchase much-needed items such as stationery, technology and food for the students who attend after school tutoring sessions. Last year they were extremely grateful for our contributions.
We are aiming this year for our hampers to include chocolate, makeup, self-care items (facial masks, bath bombs) and even stationery and pet goods!
The wider school community can assist us in two ways:
1) Make an item donation, such as - chocolate, new makeup items, self-care/bath items (soaps, facemasks, bath bombs, hair bands), stationery (pens, notebooks), pet items (toys, treats) to put towards our hampers. These can be brought in by students and given to Ms Douglass or any Vinnie member.
2) Purchase a raffle ticket from any Vinnie as they move around the school, or from the library at any time.
Last year we raised $700.00 so it would be wonderful to top this amount!
We would love to welcome all our new members this year, especially our year 7 students. If anyone would like to join our team, please come along to a meeting (held every Day 3, in G1-17), or talk to Vinnies members or the wonderful Mrs Douglass 😊.

Instrumental Music Program
The Music Department at Nazareth College is beaming with excitement and enthusiasm. It is great to see our Music students smiling from ear to ear after leaving an instrumental lesson or ensemble. The Grease band had its first rehearsal last Thursday in preparation for our College Production in June and it is safe to say that all of our instrumental lessons and ensembles are now in full swing and busily preparing for upcoming performance.
Save the date: Thursday 6 May – Music Night Soiree.
A reminder that all Year 7 students are offered complimentary lessons on all brass, woodwind and string instruments in Semester 1 only. Fees apply for other instruments including voice, guitar, piano and drum kit. Fees for Instrumental Music tuition are in addition to general school fees and are charged to your school account each semester. Please visit: SIMON - Knowledge Banks - Performing Arts and return your application to book your place. Further information about the Music Department and offers can also be found here.
College Production
We are half way through the rehearsal schedule for our College Production of GREASE, performing in June.
The excitement is ELECTRIFYING!!!
Please enjoy a short preview of our very own Thomas Guarino, Year 11 playing Kenickie in the show having some fun during rehearsals.

Thomas supported the Performing Arts staff last week during the Grade 5 taster days at the College and many of the primary school students are now eager to see him live in action on stage for the upcoming shows.
A reminder to all cast that we have our first full day rehearsal next Tuesday 9 March. This is a Student Free day. Please check the rehearsal schedule in the Google Classroom to know exactly what time you are needed at this rehearsal day.

Year 7 MINI OLYMPICS
The Year 7 students participated in the annual Mini Olympics on the 23rd February. It was so great to see them all competing and earning points for their respective houses. A tremendous amount of house spirit was displayed as was the encouragement and support shown to each other. The staff who assisted were instrumental in tallying up the points and keeping score.
Students participated in events such as the sack race, a shuttle run, quoits, and vortex throw. Students were presented with some challenges, trying new activities they may have never done before. Nevertheless, the Year 7s are to be congratulated on their enthusiasm and sense of fun they brought to the event.
Final scores were very close and I congratulate the students from MANNIX house for taking out the event and earning those valuable house points!

Taster Days
Having the primary schools on campus is always a highlight for us. An enormous amount of work goes into these events, but the benefits of seeing those smiling faces at the end of each day make it all so very worth it!
We welcomed St Anthony's, St Elizabeth's, St Gerard's, St John Vianney's, St Justin's, Resurrection, Silverton Primary and Mulgrave Primary schools. Due to Covid restrictions still in place, we had to change the groupings of the students to ensure we kept each school separate. This didn't seem to bother the Grade 5s though, as they still got to discover what a day in secondary school is like. They familiarised themselves with our facilities and they also learned some new skills!
I want to thank the Nazareth staff for being so very accommodating. Our staff go above and beyond to ensure these primary students have a day to remember. I also want to thank the Marketing and Development team for their support in organising and running these events. It really is a whole school event and one that we always look forward to. Planning is now underway for the Term 3 Taster Days.
Year 7 Information Night
The Year 7 Information night was very well attended by families. It was a night that enabled the families to meet their child's pastoral teacher and Head of House. A lot of information was presented and the slides that were used on the evening can be accessed on PAM. To conclude the evening, the Year 7s were issued with their College badge as a symbol of them being a part of our community. I would like to thank the pastoral teachers and Head of Houses for their attendance on the evening.
