Annual Grade 5 Debating
From the Debating Coordinator
Ms Warren
On Thursday 15th of July, we were privileged to host the annual Grade 5 Debating competition (round 1). Luckily, this event was able to go ahead the day before we moved to remote learning. It was a fantastic morning with Kingsbury, Preston, Preston North East and Reservoir Views Primary all in attendance to compete. The Grade 5 students were fantastic! They were extremely prepared, excited, and confident.
The kindness and maturity they showed to their teammates and competitors was most impressive and the 3 debates were fantastic to watch. The Reservoir High School student helpers and leaders worked extremely hard on the day to greet, organise, and judge the debates in an encouraging and professional manner. Julia and Soha, the debating captains, had the extremely hard job of adjudicating the debates and were excellent role models for the primary school students. Mia Amidzic did a fantastic job as Chairperson and Timekeeper while Soha Mansorani recorded data on all the debates to help us plan the upcoming draw. Jake Chen, Freya Bechly and Alana Wineberg also gave up their time to assist on the day and we could not have organised the events without the students. The staff and students from the primary schools had a great day and are extremely excited for the next round.
It was fantastic to have the local community come together, after connecting through online workshops in term 2. A big thanks to all schools for attending, the student helpers and to the Debating coach Penelope Keaughran for all her help on the day and invaluable assistance throughout the year in providing exciting opportunities for our students.
