Grade 5 Snapshot - Term 1/Week 7-8
2021
Last week all students developed a seed (idea) using a Flower Map - graphic organiser. Their idea was placed in the middle of the flower and the pedals were used to add as much detail as they could about their seed and watch it grow. Students then practised coming up with the Big Idea for their story before they started organising it into a Narrative Plot Template. This week, students have been using a Story Map to come up with many ideas about their introduction, setting, characters, problem and resolution. They have then had to decide which ideas fit their BIG idea the best and make each idea the best it can be.
Last week in reading, students began a unit of work on summarising. They have been using different graphic organisers to identify the characters, setting, problem and solution in their good FIT books. Guided Reading has continued and students have been working with their teachers on targeted learning goals.
Students have been learning about the decimal place value system through time, length, money and weight. They have played a number of games and worked collaboratively in small groups to learn from one another. Over the next couple of weeks they will demonstrate their knowledge of the number and place value system through a problem solving project.
As we come to the end of our Sharing the Planet unit. Students are now completing a research project about WWI, WWII or The Cold War. The project provides students with the opportunity to apply their learning to a global conflict. Students will then present their information to the class in Week 10. They can choose how to best present this information: video, speech, board game, 3D poster, book. We will also be visiting the Shrine of Remembrance in Week 10, this will be an opportunity for Grade 5 students to make further connections to our peace and conflict unit.
