Year 7 Mandarin

As our Year 7 students come to realise it is spring in the northern hemisphere, it all makes sense now why the lunar new year in China is called ‘Spring Festival’.

On the 17th of February, the 6th day of the lunar new year, a 3D papercutting project concluded our last day of remote learning under the snap lockdown. Here are a few captures from Class 7D.

Today, I was tasked alongside 7D to create a Chinese character meaning Spring with paper. This relates to our tasks in Chinese new year because it marks according to the lunar calendar, a new lunar year, and the beginning of spring.

Following Ms Jing’s demonstration in class last week and a video I watched today, I created this Chinese character. It is the word “spring”. As you may know, China is in the northern hemisphere and at this time in the northern hemisphere, it is spring. I found it very interesting how this character is written and how many people understand it, as Mandarin isn’t my natural language it is quite hard for me to understand. The one thing that was challenging was finding out how to glue the separate sides, so it looks 3D. I definitely think it was a bit challenging but educating in a good way, so it was fun, and I really liked this activity.

Chinese Culinary Delight

Due to the sudden lockdown, we had to improvise planned classes to suit remote learning. The class was tasked with making Special Fried Rice.

Each student was given the recipe, ingredients and an instructional video clip to follow. A Certificate of Excellence was awarded to the top three students based on preparation and presentation. It is great to report that Odysseas E. of 7F was awarded the title of No. 1 Chinese Chef based on his passion, commitment and final product. The certificate will be presented to Odysseas in class in front of his peers.

STUDENT REFLECTION

Qin ai de Zhang lao shi,
It was great to be cooking special fried rice as it is easy to cook and has nice various ingredients. I made the special fried rice and my parents loved it. I wish you could taste it too.
Whilst cooking fried rice I appreciated the simplicity in the dish yet the amazing flavour that is produced by the combination of all the ingredients.
I am looking forward to cooking more Chinese foods in the future.
