The Arts

Year 12 Art

The Year 12 Art class went to HEIDEMOMA last Wednesday to see work by Joy Hester. The exhibition was called: REMEMBER ME. The students were very fortunate to see the work as it closed on Friday and they are actually studying her and will be assessed on their knowledge and analysis of her work.

They took part in an hour-long exhibition talk and then an hour site tour. We debriefed and relaxed in the sculpture garden afterwards where we ate lunch together. It was a hot and busy day but I was very proud of each student's resilience and stamina.

Year 8 Mindful Creations in Lockdown

During the 5 day lockdown, Year 8E learned about ephemeral art. There are many forms of ephemeral art, from sculpture to performance, but the term is usually used to describe a work of art that only occurs once, like a happening, and cannot be embodied in any lasting object to be shown in a museum or gallery.

The class was given the task to go for a mindful walk in nature and collect things like; gum nuts, sticks, bottle tops, pieces of metal or rubbish. Once they had collected various items they were challenged to make something creative with their "treasures". Here were some of the ideas:

  • Make a picture in the dirt.
  • Get some glue and paste your pieces onto paper to create a scene.
  • create a garden sculpture.
  • make something useful you can use.
  • bind your bits together and hang on the fence
  • Just spend time focusing on your treasures and don't think about anything else.

After they had completed the task they shared a photo of their creation and spoke with their classmates about how this mindful task made them feel.
