Bogong High Plains Camp

Year 12 Outdoor and Environmental Studies

In late February, the Year 12 Outdoor and Environmental Studies group escaped Melbourne for their first camp of the year. The trip was to the Bogong High Plains, an alpine area behind Falls Creek Ski Resort, that saw the group collecting examples to help them with their class work.

The first day was a long drive followed by a short walk to visit historic sites such as Wallace’s Hut, an old cattlemen’s hut that has been standing for over 130 years and served a shelter for farmers running their cattle on the high plains over the warmer months.

Day two involved a short walk up Mt Cope to see the sights and expanse of the high plains. Following this we had an extended lunch at camp followed by an afternoon of rock climbing and abseiling. Navigating our way back to the bus was a challenge set for the group and our orienteering skills came in handy through some trackless terrain.

The final two days saw us completing an introductory hike, in preparation for our more challenging camp early next term. We packed early and set out from Pretty Valley Pondage with the destination being Tawonga Huts, set at the base of the stunning Jaithmathang Mountain.

Once set-up, the group summited Mt Jaithmathang and witnessed stunning views over the nearby ranges, including Mt Bogong and Mt Feathertop, the two tallest mountains in Victoria.

After a night of wonderful weather and a stunning sunset, we were back into action the following morning, hiking back to the bus then completing our first SAC for the year, reflecting on the previous four days.

Special thanks to Miss Sherry and Miss Le Lievre who joined Mr Greaves on the camp, allowing the students to have such an enjoyable experience.
