Maths Matters

Children learn to count before they learn to write numbers, just like they learn to speak before they learn to write words. They are exposed to mathematical concepts through a variety of media, through songs, books, play, interaction with adults and other children.

Mathematics opens up a world of learning and possibility for students.

Mathematics in K–6 focuses on developing students’ mathematical understanding, fluency, communication, reasoning and problem-solving. Students study areas of Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, and Statistics and Probability. These capabilities enable students to respond to familiar and unfamiliar situations, using strategies to make decisions and solve problems relevant to their further education and everyday lives.

We are surrounded by maths every day. There are many ways that Parents are able to assist their children to develop their mathematical understanding and confidence. Show your child the relevance and the purpose of maths and how necessary it is to the real world. Help them understand the importance of maths in the activities they enjoy and everyday experiences.

Helping children to enjoy maths is important in ensuring they understand it and welcome the challenge of problem-solving. Children can become confident learners able to apply their maths skills to higher learning and everyday life in general. Utilise everyday opportunities to help your child learn about numbers. When you are playing, at the dinner table, shopping, driving in the car, going for a walk, on a picnic or at the beach there are plenty of opportunities to talk about numbers, shapes, colours, days and dates.

Year 4 Science

In Science, Year 4 have been investigating energy with Miss Fitz. This week they collaborated to plan, design and construct wind turbines to model this.
