Thank you to all the parents who supported our teams last weekend and who also followed our COVID rules. This week I would like to remind all players that it is compulsory for you to sign in with their Coach. This is a NSW Health requirement and, from this week, any student who has not signed into the team book will be unable to take the court.

Congratulations

Late last year Isaac Nicholls (Year 10) was selected in the Penrith Cricket Club AW Green Shield team as one of the two key spin bowlers. The AW Green Shield is a historic Premier NSW Cricket championship for Under 16s.

All 20 Sydney Grade Cricket Clubs select teams and are permitted two country players per team. Penrith had a Newcastle and Wagga player. Despite the odds and critics, after 9 gruelling 50 over matches over December and January, Penrith progressed to the Grand Final against Northern Districts (played last weekend) who had been undefeated throughout the championship. Unfortunately, Penrith were defeated but put up an amazing fight to the end.

Isaac was ranked the 8th bowler from 200 bowlers over the Championship, taking 16 wickets and bowling a total of 97 overs. His best bowling was 4/13 off 10 overs, against Sutherland. He finished first on the Penrith team wicket takers. The School would like to acknowledge Isaac’s achievements in The AW Green Shield and as a member of  the Penrith Grade Cricket Club. He has represented himself, the Club and the region incredibly well.

Cricket

1st XV v St Patrick's

On Saturday the 1st XI started the New Year playing against St Patrick’s at home. Wil Stacy kept his winning ways at the toss and elected to bat first.

The top order of Oliver Freeman (51), Bethany Lane and Mani Hitchenson started the innings well, taking us to 1/46 by the first drinks break. Unfortunately, only Wil Stacy mounted any resistance at the end of the innings, with BMGS bowled out for 114.

In reply, our bowling was outstanding early on in St Pat’s innings.  Luca Donnelly's superb 3/14 left St. Patrick's at 4/19, however, their batsman then dug deep, taking their score beyond ours by the 47th over, for the loss of seven wickets. Oliver Freeman also bowled particularly well, taking 3/21.

Basketball

Welcome back to Basketball! It was wonderful to see all students return to training and in action over the weekend for the start of the Term 1 season. For Round 1, all Boys' teams travelled to St Augustine’ College and the Girls' Open Cs travelled to Barker, whilst the remaining Girls' teams hosted St Spyridon College at home.

Our Girls' teams fought hard against some tough competition. The First V played wonderful controlled defence throughout the game and ultimately came away with the victory in what was a close game from start to finish. The Open Cs played well in the first half pulling away to take the lead by halftime demonstrating team first basketball on both offence and defence. After the half-time break Barker made a strong comeback to finish the game in a draw. Our Intermediate B and Junior B teams were firing on all cylinders from the opening tip-off, stifling the opposition and coming away with strong wins to start the season. The Junior D team fought hard throughout the game, and continued to show improvement. The girls will continue to work hard in training to develop their skills on offence and defence for next week's game.

Our Boys' teams faced off against perennial powerhouse St Augustine’s College, and came away with a string of encouraging results. The First V demonstrated determination and adaptability, overcoming injuries to lead from start to finish in what was a close battle. The boys should be encouraged by their performance and will work hard to continue to make positive strides throughout the season. We welcomed the 13s Blue team this term, who came out and made an emphatic statement, producing a strong team performance to come away with a victory in their first game as a team. The 13s Gold played well in a back-and-forth first half, before falling away to a well-organised opposition. The boys played hard until the final whistle but were unable to bridge the gap. They will look ahead to training with a focus on developing greater consistency on defence and chemistry. The 15s and 14s Blue started their matches strongly and never looked back, as everyone played their role in both victories and should be commended for the character shown. Our Second V, 15s Gold and 14s Gold were all involved in nail-biting contests, with all three games being decided in the dying seconds.

Round 2 will see the Girls' First V travel to Redlands, the Open Cs host Oakhill College, and the remaining Girls' teams travel to Central Coast Grammar. The Boys host St Patrick’s College (Blue teams) and local rivals St Paul’s Grammar (Gold teams).

Touch Football

BMGS Junior C were defeated by Oxley College, 13 - 0

The Junior C team had a tough start to the ISA season last Saturday. With only five players on the field and no substitutions, it was incredibly difficult to keep up with the energy of the opposition as the game went on. Although we did not walk away with the win, we were happy with our perseverance throughout the game, our ball control and limited mistakes. The Junior Cs are excited for next week’s game!

BMGS Junior B were defeated by Oxley College, 7 - 0

This week's game against Oxley College was a hard game, but also a fun learning experience. Unfortunately, we did not get the win this time around, losing 7-0, however, was always going to be a difficult assignment given the amount of players missing from our team. A big thank you is extended to Alana Murray, who backed up after her tough game to fill in for us, and played exceptional well. The whole team deserves recognition, as we probably played our best Touch Football of the season, but as the game went on our defence became fatigued and we just could not keep up with the oppositions swift attack. I am proud of all players’ attitude and effort.

BMGS Open 3 defeated St. Paul's Grammar School, 5 - 2

In a thrilling game that went down to the wire, the Open 3 team were able to hold off a fast-finishing St Paul's Grammar School to win their first game of the ISA competition. Well done girls!

BMGS Firsts drew with St. Andrew's Cathedral School, 5 - 5

Our first ever game in the ISA Division 1 was against St Andrew’s College and proved to be challenging right from the start as we faced a fast-paced opposition and their strong defence. While we scored the first try of the game, we went into half time down 3-1. Determined to get back in the game, we utilised various attacking plays we had been perfecting during training sessions and managed to gain four tries in quick succession, ending the game in a 5-5 draw. It was a great job by every player for persisting and coming back from a half time deficit, despite limited subs, however, we still have plenty to work on to ensure we get the win next time!
