Thursday Market Returns

Dear Families,

It was so great to see a huge turnout at the Thursday Market last week. The VCAL students were inundated with eager customers and sold out almost all of their food on offer.

The team work was highly visible, so much so that a parent from our community who has been in the hospitality  game for many years was impressed with their ingenuity and has offered to come and speak with them about career pathways.

It was also so wonderful to have our regular long term stall-holders back onsite. Thank you to Ali, Fatima and Suad for your warm welcoming smiles and extraordinary food on offer.

We will be welcoming everyone back on THURSDAY MARCH 26th at 3pm. Don’t forget to bring cash and an empty tummy!

Year 5/6B will be running their sausage sizzle stall at the market. They are raising money for their beloved Orangutang Archie.

I hope to see you all there next week.

SRC Semester One Report

Under the capable leadership of the 2021 SRC Captains: Oisin O’Leary, Mazin Bakhit and Jordyn Ponne, the Collingwood College SRC have gotten off to a flying start for 2021. After the difficulties of 2020, where students really did not get the opportunity to perform their roles as the nominated SRC students to capacity, most of last year’s students have been rolled over into the 2021 positions. Of course other interested and passionate students have been included into this year’s SRC and hopefully they will all have the opportunity to truly represent the student body to the best of their abilities.

This term has absolutely flown by, but the students have enthusiastically participated in a number of SRC events, such as the weekly SRC meetings, a Training Day for everyone and the Years 5 to 10 Swimming Sports. Next week SRC Representatives will be given the responsibility of helping showcase Collingwood College to the local and surrounding community on Open Day. Their involvement on this day has always impressed visitors attending the school as their enthusiasm and love for the school has always been evident and certainly impressive.

The Swimming Sports were a very successful event with the SRC all helping to provide food and refreshments for the student body as the competitions took place during the day. Apart from the fact that the students were able to raise funds, which will be allocated to a charity of the students’ choice, there was a great feeling of camaraderie and team work experienced by the students. They worked tirelessly at the barbeque and were appreciated by the sports attendees throughout the day. As everyone can appreciate, they worked enthusiastically and energetically throughout the day. They are now busy planning for the next major Sporting event, Athletics Day which will be happening on the last day of this term, an event Collingwood students are looking forward to.

The SRC Training Day was a day set aside for old and new members where they met and participated in team building activities and goal setting for the year.  It is always gratifying to see the students working together from the younger students to the older ones, with the common goal of achieving productive and worthwhile contributions for the student body and the school as a whole. This is a day where students from all levels share and contribute their ideas, hopes and plans for 2021.  Every student that attended really enjoyed the day and seemed very happy to be able to represent and contribute their energies to the school and student representation.

I am hoping that 2021 will be a wonderful year and that the students have the opportunity to contribute to their school as best as they can. To the 2021 SRC Captains, Jordyn, Mazin and Oisin, I am sure under your enthusiastic and competent leadership, the SRC will have a successful and positive year.

The Social Studio & Collingwood College Banner Collaboration

Four of our Collingwood College Year 12 students: Apple, Lucia, Man Cing and Pedro, who first came to Australia as teenagers with very little English have recently taken part in a collaborative art project with The Social Studio.

The Social Studio is a not for profit social enterprise dedicated to improving the lives of young Australians who come from refugee or migrant backgrounds. They operate a fashion business that offers TAFE level training, workshops and employment in manufacturing and retail. As part of this collaboration Bonnie Mooney, a graphic artist, took the students on a tour around Collingwood Yards and The Social Studio’s new store and studio location and visited our school a couple of times.

The brief was to create a design for a banner that reflected belonging, identity and place from a migrant perspective. The central image is two figures embracing with marbling colours blending together. The different colours represent the diverse cultural backgrounds that each individual brings to our community and how this is shared through our connections with each other. For some of the students the colours of their home countries still feel strong, for others they spoke about their colours fading out to white like they are finding a new palette in their new home. The artists invited students from language diverse backgrounds within the school to participate in the project through writing out letters/symbols in their own languages.

Prior to coming to Australia, these students enjoyed being creative but did not see an opportunity for themselves to pursue a career in the Arts. They feel that through their schooling at Collingwood College and this collaboration with The Social Studio that there is an avenue for them to follow their creative passions.

The banner was displayed at Collingwood Yards Open Day on Saturday, 13th March and will remain up for the next week.  All are welcome to view the banner at 35 Johnston St, Collingwood.
