Councillor Comes to Collingwood College
On Tuesday, 9th March we had a councillor from Yarra City Council come to the 3-4B classroom to speak to all the Year 3 & 4 students from Reggio and Steiner classes. Her name is Anab Mohamud. Some students and teachers met her at the office and brought her to the classroom.
The students set up the 3-4 classroom by arranging the chairs in a curved shape. The students in the 3-4 classes wrote some questions before her visit. They made a Happy International Womens' Day poster using the colours purple, green and white.
Rio & Lottie wrote an acknowledgment of country and shared it before Anab spoke.
Anab told us some facts about her life:
She was born in Somalia and she left when she was 2 years old because there was a war there. She spent ten years in Kenya with her family. Then they moved to Australia when she was 12. She went to university and studied Law.
Last year she applied to be a councillor and she was elected. One of her opponents was Gabrielle de Vietri and she became the Mayor.
After she talked we asked her some questions. Some of these included:
What do you have to do as a councillor? "Some things include making sure footpaths and roads are safe, looking after parks and making sure the City of Yarra is a safe environment."
Why did you decide to become a councillor? "Because I wanted to help people in my local community because I have been homeless myself. I also want my daughter to have the opportunity to have a positive future in a peaceful world."
What did you want to be when you were younger? "When I was very young I wanted to be an astronaut, then I wanted to be a lawyer and now my big goal is to become Prime Minister one day."
Students had the opportunity to write some suggestions for Anab to take to the Yarra Council for them to discuss.
After her presentation Daniel & Clem gave her some flowers as a gift.
