Australian Ballet Program

We are excited to continue the partnership we have with The Australian Ballet, who have kindly offered some free online sessions to our GSSC students during the lockdown. All dance students from Year 8 to Year 12 are taking part in a technique class each Thursday with professional dancers from the organisation. They teach technical skills and a bit of repertoire, across the genres of ballet and contemporary dance. It was wonderful to gather all of our dance faculty together! We are also very excited about the opportunity for our VCE Dance students to be mentored by The Australian Ballet’s Head of Education, Katy. Here students are learning about different aspects of choreography and they will also have the chance to be mentored by the Education team in a one on one set up over Teams over the coming weeks. This is a wonderful opportunity for our students!

On Thursday, we had a Team's call with Jessica and James from The Australian Ballet. They showed us many different techniques and stretches on the Ballet Barre and also in the centre. We all did a warm up then worked with Jessica on the barre and she showed us many different moves. James taught us some choreography from one of their recent shows. I love having this partnership because it helps everyone stay physical and do what we love, which is dance! It was fun to try some new moves with new people and to have all of the dance students on the one call.

Working with Katy, from The Australian Ballet, is amazing as her experience with dance brings so much to the lesson, and adds another layer of understanding to what we are learning. We used references from Twyla Tharp’s book to explain different aspects of dance, such as dynamics and using the space around us to move and express the intention of the dance, as well as how to manipulate the choreography so the audience can fully appreciate a dance piece. I am really excited to continue our classes with including working one on one with some of the dancers, to work on and refine our solos, duets and trio dances over the next couple weeks. I am looking forward to our next class, learning from and working with The Australian Ballet and Katy!
