Year 10 Selecting Year 11 Courses for 2021

Year 10’s have been selecting their VCE or VCAL courses for 2021 over the past 2 weeks. Staff have been contacting them via Teams, counselling over the phone and recording their choices. This has been a mammoth undertaking with approximately a dozen staff contacting about 380 students.

If parents weren’t available to participate in these calls, confirmation and approval was sought through subsequent contact. For many, who have chosen a VET subject through GOTAFE, their enrolment requires submission of a GOTAFE enrolment application. Please ensure the steps explained to your child about this are followed.

Year 12 students aspiring for Further Education

Students who have had their education negatively impacted should look closely at SEAS and see if there is an opportunity for them to gain recognition (and equity in their application) via a SEAS application. These applications may require students to submit evidence or a statement of ‘impact’. These may require a ‘statement of support’ from a person who is qualified to discuss it. Depending on the kind of impact experienced, the person supplying the ‘statement of support’ may need to be a medical professional, neighbourhood leader, teacher or other responsible adult. They can submit these statements via an electronic link emailed to them or via a hard copy document mailed to VTAC.

Year 12 Scholarships

Scholarships are the next topic we will be investigating, students should be keeping an eye out in our usual communication channels for updates and opportunities. The greatest number of scholarships available (across most universities) through VTAC in one single application. Given that many of these scholarships are equity-based the Universities will be looking at factors likely covered in a SEAS application, there is the capacity to use the information from a SEAS application in a VTAC Scholarship application. Students can have their statements of support shared across both their SEAS and Scholarships application. To do this they must complete both SEAS and Scholarship applications and then choose to distribute the links to those supplying statements of support at once.

We’ve already seen some scholarships outside of VTAC been advertised. Deadlines vary and the eligibility of each varies so it’s critical that students take responsibility for looking out for these as we distribute them via our usual channels, it’s impossible to know student preferences or individual circumstances and target scholarships to individuals. Shortly we will release details of the La Trobe University Vice Chancellors Excellence and Equity Scholarships. Students keen on a course at La Trobe should stay tuned.

Year 9 subject selections

Year 9 subject selections have been running smoothly with councillor’s from the Mooroopna campus contacting students and parents via Microsoft teams. We have been very impressed with the students preparation and readiness for our calls. It has also been wonderful to have parents actively involved in their child’s subject selections for year 10 in 2021 and directions they would like to pursue for year 11 and 12.

RMIT University - New Pathways Guaranteed program

This new program will secure you a place in a Bachelor degree, as soon as you complete the relevant vocational course. You’ll get to study the field of your choice, and graduate with two RMIT qualifications.

There are 85 pathway package options and you apply for the pathway packages via VTAC. This is an excellent option for students who are concerned they may not achieve the required ATAR for their desired Bachelor courses.

SBAT Opportunities for Current Year 10’s

If interested in an SBAT, Yr 10 students must enrol in a VET. They will then be withdrawn from the VET they’ve chosen once when their SBAT is confirmed.

Agriculture

Here is a great opportunity to pursue a school-based traineeship In Agriculture. Combining on the job work and training with fortnightly sessions out of the DECA complex in Wanganui Rd you'll work your way towards a Cert. 2 or 3 in Agriculture.

The Ag Schools program offers:

• practical hands on training

• school based traineeship

• funding available for employers

• industry supported

• real-world application and education

Reece Plumbing School Based Traineeship

Reece currently have an exciting opportunity for students interested in doing a School-based Traineeship at their Shepparton Plumbing branch. Here is some key information of the program:

-Cert II Warehousing Operations (with a strong retail focus)

-duration is 36 months

-All Trainees are assigned a trainer/assessor, so all training is on the job (no TAFE day required)

-Theory work is done during paid work time

-Trainees are required to spend a minimum of one weekday and a Saturday morning in branch

-Our School-based trainees are paid above the trainee wage

-There is the possibility the traineeship could lead to full time employment at completion of the certificate

-We are currently taking on year 10 students
