A return to Remote Learning

We are now over two weeks into the latest return to working and learning from home, and it seems that although this continues to provide us with challenges, much was learnt from our Term 2 experiences with remote learning.

Students seem to be connecting and engaging more effectively this time around, and we are currently in the process of contacting families to discuss the progress of students.

Our Learning Mentors are calling the parents/guardians of every student in the next fortnight, and we look forward to hearing feedback from the home perspective. Our aim is to increase the number of students who are following the correct procedures to connect with their Learning Mentor at the beginning of each day, which will give us an accurate measure of student engagement. Text messages are also being sent to parents if students are not connecting to their scheduled classes as required.

We are well aware that given the extended nature of the learning taking place away from school, we need to do all that we can to ensure that the learning progress continues from afar.

Term Three is a particularly critical one for our students, in the senior years especially, and we appreciate your assistance in helping us to support all of our students in the best way possible.

One of the more challenging tasks we have faced this term has been to work through the subject selection process at each year level. Several virtual information sessions have already been conducted, with the next of these being the Year 8 – 9 presentation that will air on Monday 24th August at 7pm.

Our thanks go to the staff and students who have been involved in putting these sessions together, in addition to continuing their own teaching and learning in their allocated classes.  These sessions are being supported by a further layer of phone calls home, with one to one guidance provided to each student involved.

The workload and commitment required to reach out to each student is something that I am proud of in our staff, and I think it shows the care and support that we have for each child at GSSC.

Finally, in keeping with the theme of staying connected with one another, we look forward to providing the opportunity for parents/guardians to engage in parent/teacher interviews later in the term.  These will be conducted online also, and we will provide further details to you all in the near future.

We hope you are all doing as well as can be in these trying times, and we really do look forward to seeing you all back on our campuses as soon as it is appropriate to do so.
