Year 8 News

Hi everyone,

Our Year 8s are working well in preparation for the current CATs. They’ll be taking place over the next two weeks.  The latest Learning Behaviour Updates are now available on Compass and we’ll be celebrating our high learning behaviour achievers and high attendance in the following week or so. Well done to those students!

At the end of Term 3, Year 8 students had the opportunity to attend a film talk and viewing of the movie, Spiderman: Into the spider-verse at ACMI, Southbank, Melbourne. The session complimented the Film as Text unit studied in our English classes.  We had an early start to the day, departing at 7am and arrived a little early having a surprising smooth run into the city.  This enabled us to explore Fed Square and spend some energy before settling in to watch the movie at ACMI.  We were impressed with student engagement with the discussion of film as text after the movie.  Many of them answered questions and engaged in good discussion about the different elements of film.  We finished the day with lunch in the city.  Overall, we had a thoroughly enjoyable day.

School Uniform

With the warmer weather coming up, it’s a good time to check summer uniform items.  Please contact us if you are having issues accessing any. Lowes are having a 20% off schoolwear sale next week, check our calendar of events in this newsletter for dates.

Student Laptops

A reminder that students are expected to have a charged laptop and need to bring their laptop to all classes. Could parents and guardians please check that their child is taking their charged laptop to school with a charger.  This would assist with development of good organisational habits.

Science

Students in science are studying the transformation of Energy. One of the topics this term is the transformation of light energy into electrochemical energy in the eye. Students are conducting cows eye dissections to explore the anatomy of the eye more closely. They also note the important differences between the eye of a cow and the eye of a human. The students are preparing for their final science assessments. These will be on sound energy and include graphing of a hearing test and a discussion of how the human ear receives sound.

PE/Health

This term in PE students have been developing their swimming skills. Students have learnt how to perform survival back stroke, freestyle, and breaststroke. They are soon to complete the learning task of treading water, where to be at standard students must be able to treat water for longer than 3 minutes. For the CAT,  students will be performing valuable lifesaving skills. Students who have not been participating have been completing a booklet on water safety. We have been enjoying getting in the water and learning new skills!

Year 8 Art Character Profile Posters

Students have been learning about how to create a character with a narrative and how to present this information in a fun and engaging way. Students have created profiles of a character they have designed themselves. They have then layered colours, shapes and font styles together to display this information in a creative and colourful way that works with their

character.

Humanities

This term Year 8s are studying Civics and Citizenship and exploring Australia's representative democracy and its features. We’re focusing on connecting their learning with real-world experience including preferential voting and how representatives are elected to the House of Representatives. Opportunistically, students are looking forward to seeing the upcoming state election and campaigns and seeing how the new Victorian Parliament will be formed with new members.
