Learning and Teaching

Dear Parents,

Back in May this year our Year 3 and Year 5 students sat NAPLAN.

NAPLAN is a nationwide measure through which parents, teachers, schools, education authorities, governments and the broader community can determine whether or not young Australians are developing the literacy and numeracy skills that provide the critical foundation for other learning and for their productive and rewarding participation in the community.

NAPLAN results allow parents/carers and educators to see how students are progressing in literacy and numeracy over time – individually, as part of their school community, and against national standards.

The tests provide an important contribution to monitoring and evaluating the performance of schools and school systems in these fundamental capabilities. They also provide schools, states and territories with information about how education approaches are working, the areas to be prioritised for improvement, and those schools requiring support in the teaching and learning of literacy and numeracy. The results can assist teachers by providing additional information to support their professional judgement about students’ levels of literacy and numeracy attainment and progress.

Our Year 3 and 5 students participated in the NAPLAN assessment focusing on:

 • Reading

• Writing

• Spelling

• Grammar and Punctuation

 • Numeracy

We are very proud of the achievements of our students and their positive attitudes when undertaking the assessments. NAPLAN data is used to track students’ growth from Year 3 to 5, examine trends to inform professional learning for our staff, examine researched based practices which impact student learning as well as plan for our Annual Action Plan.

At St Joseph’s the five year trend and our school data this year, tell us that a change in practices have led to improving results. In particular our year 3 students were above the state in all learning areas. The staff at St Joseph’s will continue to improve our students outcomes through growth in all areas of learning.

Have a great week!
