2023 Slattery House Captains

Introducing the 2023 Slattery House Captains

College Vice-Captain – Wellbeing – Luke Mifsud

My Name is Luke Mifsud and I am the 2023 College Vice-Captain for Wellbeing. I have the privilege of working with the House Captains in the newly formed Student Wellbeing Team.

As a team, we believe that a student role in our ongoing wellbeing will be greatly beneficial to Marist. Following in the way of our Mother Mary, this will be an opportunity for members of our student body to support fellow students with the goal of forming a stronger College and stronger bonds between students. I am passionate about men’s mental health and will always be available to chat with younger boys, as I believe that care of ourselves starts at a young age. Luca will do a brilliant job taking care of Slattery House and I will just be another helping hand if needed.

Academic Captain – Joshua Gray

My name is Josh Gray, the Slattery Academic Captain. For 2023, I aim to guide the Slattery boys towards achieving success in academic studies.

Through my years at Marist, I have been on a journey to improve my academics, learning many lessons along the way. I believe it’s possible for everyone to achieve their goals and using my experience, I believe I can help any boy who needs support and advice in doing this. I encourage everyone to aim high for the rest of Term 4, and onwards to 2023. It’s important that everyone gives their best effort this exam block and builds good habits in their study. This can be hugely beneficial for next year, when everyone’s workload will be increasing, particularly those entering senior years. I look forward to finishing the year off strongly and having a great year for academics in 2023.

Cultural Captain – John Davidson

I would chiefly like to thank my peers as I wouldn’t have been offered this opportunity without them. I would like to acknowledge their encouragement through the years, particularly during the highs and lows.

As the Slattery Cultural Captain for 2023, it is my role to support the students in the College’s life and what it has to offer. Largely this involves the musical program and the other arts such as drama and visual art. Furthermore, this isn’t the full extent to which culture covers. It can be said that other than the arts, culture doesn’t have a select area. As such, the role of cultural captain often finds its way into other portfolios.

I would like to continue this in 2023 by providing my full support to the boys in as many ways as I can. I can’t tell you the exact meaning of life, but I can help you find your purpose while you’re at school. I look forward to next year and the opportunities and challenges it will possess. Again, if you need help, do not hesitate to ask. There’s always someone here to provide a helping hand.

Mission Captain – Tom Rees

When arriving at the College in Year 7, the captains of Slattery were possibly the nicest boys I had ever met. Their general energy and kindness could be clearly seen in how they conducted themselves throughout all aspects of College life. I wanted to be like them.

Over the past 5 years, I've looked forward to just having the opportunity to mirror those same boys that I looked up to when I was younger. Having been selected as 2023 Slattery House Mission Captain, I look forward to fulfilling these expectations and meeting the responsibilities of the role.

I aim to ensure that all boys know about the Mission Department. It has suffered the biggest impact of all the portfolios because of COVID-19, hence the Mission Team plans to really bring it back in 2023. Some events we plan to launch (with help of other portfolios) include, BBQ with the Homeless, charity sport matches and other events which will all assist greatly in reviving the Mission aspect of the College.

Not knowing what MATES and Mission were until early Year 9, my aim is to share it with all Slattery boys, particularly those coming into Year 7 in 2023. I look forward to working with all the Slattery boys in the hope they can get the most out of their time here. I'm always up for a chat if boys have questions and I look forward to working with the leadership team throughout 2023.

Sports Captain – James Prole

It has been a great start to the 2023 House Cup for Slattery in the sporting events. Already there have been 3 intra-school events: the Gilroy Ash Dash, Ignatius Chess, and Ephrem Rock Climb. All boys who competed have done very well, getting some important points to try and improve our House Cup place from 2022.

A reminder for all boys wanting to play Term 1 sport for 2023, signups are available on the Student Café for AFL, Cricket, Volleyball and Swimming.

I encourage all boys to participate in at least 1 new sport over the next 12 months. Wishing all boys good luck in their upcoming exams.

Wellbeing Captain – Luca Malghem

Hello, I’m Luca Malghem and I’m the new Wellbeing Captain for Slattery House. A lot of you are probably wondering what Wellbeing is. It’s a new role that has been created this year, and I am lucky enough to have been elected for it. Wellbeing is obviously about being well and that’s basically all I want for you boys, for everyone to ‘be well’, feel like they’re welcome in this school and can hopefully find their place here. So, myself and the rest of the wellbeing captains are here to help and we’re very open to talk to you guys if you have any problems – from handling academic stress to mental health, to sporting injuries. There’s obviously a lot more to it; we’re very involved with the school counsellors here and we’ll be organising various events like Day for Daniel or Wear It Purple Day. So that’s me and that’s Wellbeing - I hope you all have a good week!
