Ms Julia Wilken - Acting Head of Visual Art

We are nearing the end of the school year and it’s certainly a busy time for Visual Art students as they finish prac work and written assessment. We are very proud of their continued efforts, creativity, and dedication to the subject.

A huge congratulations to Harry Grellman (11R) for winning the student section of the Brisbane Open House Photography Competition. Harry’s winning entry was taken during the Visual Arts in Practice excursion to Fish Lane earlier in the year. Harry is amongst a high calibre of photographers who captured Brisbane’s array of architecture and the built environment. Other winning entries can be viewed here. Congratulations Harry!

Congratulations to Phillip-John Catalano (10I) for his selection as a finalist in the Moreton Bay Region Youth Art Awards. PJ’s work explored the concept of youth culture using symbols, song lyrics and brand logos.

Great work PJ!

As the Year 11 Visual Art class begin preparation for IA1, I recently shared an article with the class about achieving success in Senior Visual Art, as written by a former NSW Art student. I have shared a summary below and you can read the full article here

Tips on how to gain a high ATAR score in Visual Art:

  • Time Management: this subject involves a considerable amount of work, which will require a lot of your time during your ATAR year. Dividing your time wisely between all your other subjects requires organisation and planning. You cannot get a high result if you don’t use your time cleverly.
  • Your ‘Body of Work’: Both IA2 and IA3 are worth 60% of your final ATAR score- start early! Nothing great gets done the night before.
  • Art criticism and art history: Visual Art is known as a practical based subject however it’s crucial that you research, read and understand current artists and what’s influenced their practice. The Visual Art syllabus is very diverse so ensure you pick artists and/or artworks that relate to your work.
  • Your art teacher/s: Listen to your teachers! Write down their suggestions, feedback and listen to their intentions. They are there to support you.
  • Your Visual Art classmates: As Visual Art has such a diverse syllabus you can celebrate your peer’s uniqueness and talents rather than tearing each other down because of marks and assessment. Support each other, make suggestions, and build each other up. You will become a close group by the end of the senior year.
  • Passion: You chose this subject for a reason. Give it your all. Create the best work ever. Write the best essay ever. Your passion and love for the subject will be rewarded in the end.
