Investigations with Imagination

Last week students in the Middle Years Forensics class, had the opportunity to investigate a crime scene and perform an autopsy on some gherkins that had found themselves in a pickle.

Working in pairs, the students were required to collect a victim from the crime scene and return with them to their lab space. They then proceeded to note all important external features, before conducting an internal investigation, in which they were required to locate the heart and any bullets lodged in the victim.

The final task was to take a sample of the bodily fluids, to determine if the victim had narcotics in their system when they died. The sample was then transferred onto litmus paper and the students documented the result in their findings.

Other than a few students turning their nose at the smell of the gherkin, the class were eager learners, who enjoyed studying some interesting and different aspects of forensic science.
