This term Stage 3 students have been engaging in the Story Heroes program as part of our "Read Up" Program.
Students were introduced to the program in Week 1 via zoom where they heard from the program creators - Shannon and Jess from Weld Stories. They shared helpful advice and tips on how to start writing a story and inspired us to be storytellers.
In week 2 students took part in four two-hour creative writing workshops. There workshops included:
An example of a workshop "Synonym Game"
Students learnt all about synonyms and the importance of finding synonyms for words to help us make our sentences and meanings clearer. Each student was assigned with a word and their goal was to match their word with a synonym. They had to stick their synonym to their forehead without looking at it. Students then had to talk to each other without looking at their own word, or saying the actual word on anyone else's forehead, to try to find their synonym partner. They asked their peers questions such as, "What does my word mean? Describe my word to me".
Then they worked out if they were a match. Once each student had found their synonym match, they worked together in pairs to come up with a least five other words or phrases for their synonyms.
Here are some photos of Stage 3 students having a fun time completing this activity:
Last week we submitted our creative stories for submission. We are looking forward to working with Auburn West Public School and Coonamble Public School in upcoming weeks to create a short movie and a short-form podcast series. What an amazing experience this will be!
