Melbourne Street Art Excursion

Melbourne is home to over 100 art galleries, from private to large public collections, and it is safe to say that Melbourne is a cultural hub for creativity. In particular Melbourne’s Street Art is internationally renowned and is now a popular tourist attraction.

Last Thursday 27th October the Year 6 students, teachers and parent helpers braved the wet weather to wander the city’s famous laneways to view the amazing street art on display.

Thanks to Blender Studios, who provided us with wonderful guides who are street artists themselves, who guided us around Hosier and AC/DC Lane pointing out artworks along the way and informing us of how they were created, stories behind the images and any cultural, social or political importance behind the works.

Street Art can be created in various ways from painting straight onto the walls, stencils to paste-ups. Who knew there were so many different ways to create these amazing works?  We also saw pieces that are 3D, which are glued to walls.  Our guides even showed us the last 2 remaining Banksy Rats.

Students also visited ACMI (Australian Centre for the Moving Image) to see the Story of the Moving Image. This is a great interactive exhibition that guides you through the past, present and future of the moving images.  Students were able to see how projections and optical illusions developed into film, cinema, TV and computer games and how Australian stories developed over the different film mediums. The exhibition also has on display the costumes from the Hollywood blockbuster “Thor: Love and Thunder".  Students were given a disc called the Lens, a tool in which to collect digital information about exhibits that interested them to download and view later.

I can highly recommend heading into the city and viewing the Street Art and the ACMI exhibition.  We all had an amazing day despite the typical Melbourne weather.

Thank you to the teachers who helped on the day:  Miss Twining, Mr Bouris, Mr Graham, Mr Butcher, Mrs Kitching, Mrs Yallop, Bu Webster, Julie Wiggins, Louise Fox.  And a big thank you to our parent helpers, Adam Gouge, Fiona Davey, Jenna Phillips, Stacey Kingma.
