Remembrance Day Service

We paused to mark Remembrance Day at our College last Friday morning. Some of our 2023 Student Leaders also partnered with local RSL representatives to lead and sing at the service held at Warramunda Village.  Their experience of the day is shared below.

On Remembrance Day, the 11th of November, we had the pleasure of singing the National Anthem at Warramunda.

After walking over to Warramunda in the morning, we were able to have a walk around and meet some of the residents of Warramunda attending the service. As we walked around and introduced ourselves to the many residents, they thanked us for coming down and showed us much kindness.

As the service started, we sat and waited for our turn to sing. The organ was played for us as we sang Advance Australia Fair and we were joined by many voices as the residents of Warramunda sang with us. We sat back down and enjoyed the rest of the service. Afterwards, we were congratulated and thanked by many of the elderly women and men.

Overall, the experience was different but definitely enjoyable, something out of our comfort zone but also something that taught us and brought us closer to the older generation.

St Augustine's Colour Run - 29th November

Our College is hosting a Colour Run on Tuesday 29th November during Periods 5 and 6.

The purpose of the Colour Run is to celebrate diversity in our school community and celebrate all people. At St Augustine's the dignity of each person is important. We welcome cultural diversity, disability, gender equality, Koorie and LGBTQI inclusion and the engagement of all people no matter their background, gender or ability.

The colour powder used in the event is non-toxic, biodegradable and environmentally friendly consisting of 98% cornstarch and 2% food colouring.

Cost: A gold coin donation for the Brigidine Asylum Seeker Project will be collected by TAs.

Lunch: A BBQ Lunch will be provided for all students commencing at 12.54pm.

What to wear: Students are encouraged to wear sunsmart white or light coloured 'old clothing' that will make the colours vibrant to school on this day. Students may choose to wear eye protection such as sunglasses or goggles for the Colour Run. Students need to bring a towel and plastic bag to place their dirty clothing in and a change of clothes to change into before they go home. They are not expected to wear their College uniform on this day.

Students must wear a hat in order to participate. The College hat or another sunsmart hat may be worn.

Due to the large number of students participating, we will have a staggered start from 2pm. Students will marshal on the undercover court. Parents and caregivers are welcome to attend and participate in the Colour Run if they wish!

Foundation - Year 6 Colour Run commences at approx 2pm

Year 7-11 Colour Run commences at approx 2.30pm

Please remember to give consent for your child to participate via Operoo and if you would like to volunteer to help out, please contact Nicole Elliott.

Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholars

The Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholars program is a prestigious University of Melbourne program for high achieving Year 10 students. The program allows recipients to be involved in academic enrichment activities at the university, to meet with peers from schools all across Victoria and to gain insights into tertiary institutions as they complete their VCE studies. Students are selected to be a part of this program when they are in Year 10 and continue in the KLD Young Scholars program through Years 11 and 12.

To be accepted into this program is a significant recognition of the student’s application to their studies and their contribution to their school community as a leader.

We are very proud to announce that we have had three students accepted into the Kwong Lee Dow program for 2023/24. To have three KLD scholars is an unprecedented event in St Augustine’s College history and speaks volumes to the outstanding qualities that all three students exhibit.

Congratulations to Isla Carver, Tahni Davies and Sarah Whelan.

Fire Carriers visit from Aunty Margie

At our recent FIRE carrier cultural session, we had local Elder Aunty Margie come in to share her stories and knowledge with our students. Aunty Margie brought along her message stick, that she painted herself, and a clay turtle, which represents the totem for the local Yorta Yorta clan group.

Aunty Margie has a wealth of knowledge and creative skills and we look forward to continuing to have Aunty Margie join us in our cultural sessions in the future.

Condolence

We pray for the Priest family - Mathew and Taryn, Dylan (Year 8), James (Year 7), Ryan and Arlo on the recent passing of their grandmother and great grandmother Jean Priest.
