The Alma nuns from Timor Leste

A group of year 7 and 8 students were lucky to hear a presentation from Paulie Stewart and the Alma nuns from Timor Leste.  Paulie has been a member of a number of well-known rock bands and is the brother of Tony Stewart one of the 5 journalists killed in East Timor in 1975.  After first visiting Timor Leste,  Paulie has also raised significant amounts of money for the Timorese, Alma nuns who do amazing work supporting orphaned children. Paulie spoke of the  personal journey that led to his life commitment to raise money for the nuns and the nuns shared their stories of the children they help.

Our students reflected on the experience:

‘I learnt some background about Timor Leste and was about to teach my family about it. I also learnt about what conditions are like in Timor Leste and how much the Alma sisters have made a difference.'
Sophie Nikolarakos

‘I learnt about Timor Leste and how it was connected to helping the Australian soldiers at war. I wondered why the kids were abandoned by their parents.’

Connecting Community Day

The Academy Connecting Community program final event for 2022 was an action-packed sports session run by Academy’s Physical Education teacher, Alex Cowin and 8 Purple who were wonderful hosts to the years 3 and 4 students of Sacred Heart Primary school, Fitzroy. This activity was a fun way to continue to develop our relationships with our neighbours.

St Mary's House of Welcome

The Academy community is contributing to the festive Christmas hampers our neighbours, St Mary’s House of Welcome create for people in our local area.

St Mary’s House of Welcome is a not-for-profit open access centre in Brunswick Street Fitzroy providing basic essential services to people who are homeless and experiencing poverty, severe and persistent mental health issues, and those who are extremely isolated and socially marginalised.

St Mary’s House of Welcome staff  ask that none of the products contain alcohol as this can sometimes slip into commercial Christmas cakes/puddings/mince tarts.

Check out this list and see if you can help!

Academy Casual Clothes Day

Staff and students will enjoy a casual clothes day this coming Thursday November 24.  Staff and students are asked to bring a gold coin to donate at the school gates when they arrive at school. The money raised on this day will go to the Hope Co-Op which we have supported for a number of years.  The money we have raised in this time has been used to support young people who are seeking asylum in Melbourne to pursue their education whilst navigating the difficult terrain of asylum seeking in Australia.  We have been very happy to support the Hope Co-Op gives these young people.

If you would like to contribute to the work of the Hope Co-Op please contact them here
