Dear Members of the Academy Community,

Last Thursday we formally farewelled our Year 12 class of 2022 at the Graduation evening held at the Sam Remo Ballroom in Carlton North.  This is the first time we have had our Graduation at this venue and it proved to be a very appropriate venue for the Graduation evening.

It is a tradition that at each Graduation dinner we invite the College Captain or a significant student of 10 years ago to be the guest speaker.  This year our guest speaker was Ms Samantha Panettieri.  The title of Sam’s speech was “A jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of some.”

In her speech Sam reflected on her journey over the past 10 years. Below is an extract:

I was never that person who was really good at one thing or who had just one passion. I had a miscellaneous array of interests that I ‘liked’ but nothing that I could say - ‘that’s my thing, and that’s the obvious career choice for me’. I’d heard the expression ‘jack of all trades’ and was like ‘yes, that’s me’ and then heard the second part ‘master of none’ and thought ‘oh no.’  ...

So here I am today a ‘jack with many trades’; I can create cute content for social media I can host a radio show, play the cup song, teach a Zumba class, sing the alphabet to the tune of the mickey mouse theme song, and get the attention of 25 children by making random waterfall noises. I’m Sam, and I was today years old when I learnt the other part to the famous saying ‘a jack of all trades is a master of none, it is….

A jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one’.

I have learnt that attempting to be a master of one limits us to only one potential. You have some, 'many endless' potentials, so I dare you to embrace the uncertainty of life and be a jack of all trades!

With Graduation over we now move to the final two other key events, the final College Assembly for Years 7-11 on Tuesday 22 November followed by the College Eucharist on Friday November 25.

Excellence takes all forms and throughout the year, we constantly recognise student achievement and student excellence.

Our final College Assembly for students in Years 7—11 will provide an opportunity to recognize student achievement, in particular the Students of the Term whose profiles can be found in the next newsletter.

We look forward to recognising other students at the Celebration of Excellence evening on Thursday 1 December.

College Prayer

As you all know, earlier in the year a small group of staff and students met to write a new School song.  When I interviewed one of our new staff members, Ms Hannah Hale, for a position at the College she mentioned that at her secondary school, they had a school prayer.   So we decided that it would be appropriate for Academy to have a school prayer as well!  I have included the prayer we have written in this newsletter.

Every blessing,

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.” Philippians 2:3-4

Loving God,

We give thanks for the unique gifts you have bestowed on each of us and are grateful for the rich learning opportunities you offer to us each day.

Jesus, we thank you for calling us to be people of hope and welcome, united in our service of others. Remind us that our simple everyday gestures are what shape a better world

and , as we go forth today, we pray that our mercy values are lived in all our actions.

May we continue to follow in the footsteps of our foundress’:
